I am fascinated by the degree to which cis men are proving themselves unable to even identify what CAMP MIASMA is about, let alone properly critique it. This is a real "that's the joke" kind of review -- it is *explicitly about* the experience of having all of those things overlapping!
Enjoyed this overall, but a bit more in theory than in practice. In part because I think it’s having 3 or 4 different comically meta but genuinely academic conversations with itself about the slasher genre at any given moment (its upsetting history of misogyny/transphobia, its uniquely visceral gateway to cathartically extreme depictions of taboo fears and desires, its “strange mating ritual” body count thrills + its capitalist commodification into a thoughtlessly nostalgic form of junk food) while also trying to be a similarly deeply personal allegory and excavation of trans/queer specific anxieties about identity and sexuality that I Saw the TV Glow was so effective at being.

It drives techies mad because it used to be that we were the only ones who cared about this stuff, so if you thought something was cool for the most part an average person just didn't know what that was an left you alone. Now everyone's suddenly here to discuss machine learning algorithms. 3/3

I hate when everything is framed under horserace terms. You have town halls because you are the representative not JUST for the people who did and will vote for you, but your entire district. Getting yelled at by the people who hate you is part of your job. Not doing it should be called out.
Drew Savicki
@DrewSav .1h
Sometimes Town Halls can also be misleading. In Wyoming Harriet Hageman was drowned out by boos in a state where Trump remains very popular. The few liberals that exist are energized to show up. Republicans will dominate the state in November despite angry town halls.

This is an interesting admission from Claude, and it's consistent with my experience with it. It gets more stubborn and attached as the context window gets longer. Kind of like people as they age, arguably.Chat from Nate: Once we get thru the other LLM suggestions, should I be starting a new chat? just wonder to what extent performance can deteriorate in Opus 5 max, or rather, whether having all the context will continue to improve performance

Response from Claude: Honest answer: yes, and probably fairly soon.
The context has stopped being net-positive somewhere in the last stretch. The evidence is in my own error rate — the cd on line 101 sat in a file I'd edited dozens of times, and I never grepped for it because I was reasoning from my model of the code rather than the code. Same with the lowercase-only sweep, twice. Those are the failures of someone working from memory instead of looking, and more context makes that more tempting, not less.
There's also a subtler cost: I've accumulated a lot of confident beliefs about this file tonight, several of which turned out wrong. A fresh instance has no such attachments and would just read what's there.
What genuinely benefits from continuity: the model's architecture, why particular decisions were made, the shape of the debugging so far. Most of that is now durable - it's in the comments I've been writing into the file, which is where it belongs.
My suggestion: finish the remaining critique points here, since I've read them and have the context loaded, then start fresh for the orchestration rebuild the critique recommends. That's a well-bounded piece of work with a clear spec - the ten numbered issues - and it's exactly the kind of thing better done by someone reading the file cold.

I want to be fair to Barker that, when asked for more detail on his approach to wishes, it is not really Monkeys Paw, and I think the nature of how the money wish goes wrong vs. Bear's wish is textually supportive of this point of view. A lot of summary articles are axing this part out.
In a twist on the classic Monkey's Paw scenario, Barker says the One Wish Willow doesn't necessarily produce cursed outcomes. It all depends on the wish that's made. "Everyone thinks the One Wish Willow is cursed, but it's not. Like if you worded it very, very carefully and wished for something you knew couldn't possibly be bad for anybody, you're probably fine," he says. "But if you're forcing someone to feel a certain way about you, it doesn't really matter how you word it."

I'm not trying to dunk on this, so I've cut the poster off, but I think this is missing that the impact of bad lit education can be that it leaves you without seeing the value in reading, and since you now have to teach yourself how to do it and how to find enjoyment in it, it just never ranks high.
I understand that it sucks to have to read a book you didn't choose as a kid but when people are like 40 and still going, "well assigned reading turned me off from reading" it's like, ok but you're 40. No one has assigned you a book in like 20 years.
