I do enjoy text adventure games more - like a boomer. I'd rather take my time than hack and slash. I've played many first-person-shooters, I'm just not interested in developing them. Maybe that's what attracts me to developing text and point-and-click text adventure games?

And too old to experience digital gaming as a youth. Some of the conclusions in "The Truth About Baby Boomer Gamers" are applicable to me. I enjoyed pin-ball machines and arcade digital games but never developed the gaming reflexes associated with GenX. bpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.northe...

I ran into this study while researching game design. It's nearly 10 years old and still holds up. Technically, being born in 1963, I fall into "Generation Jones" - growing up in the shadow of the silent generation - too young to participate in the cultural revolution.

Playing around with alternative opening scenes for my game. The protagonist in the opening scene compares a crowd of people boarding a train at a station to a European Starling murmuration. The music is "Our Story Begins" from the prolific Kevin MacLeod. The video is cut from several CC videos.

I feel a similar vibe with the vintage computer hobby. And in a different way. Our greatest challenge will be a scarcity of original components followed by the art and craftsmanship dying off. It is critical that we inspire the next generation, or it dies with us. youtu.be/c8svUszBVxo?...

I’ll be using a lot of public domain illustrations for it. No character animation other than static image effects - scene changes to imply motion, multiple 2d layers for simulating 3d, maybe zoom effects with the layers. Just starting to think about it really.

Makes sense. I developed and rewrote everything in parallel for my first game. Since it was mostly a text adventure game, it didn’t require much artwork (my lowest level skill). It didn’t require heavily rely on audio dialogue which was fun to include. My next effort is a point-and-click adventure.

Foundational skills are important of course. So is satisfying your motivational needs. I try to create smallish things to satisfy my desire for completion while I’m working on longer term projects. Sometimes it’s to try out a coding technique or a simple idea.

I’m heartened to hear I’m not the only one who thinks this way. It took me 2.5 yrs to get my first game finished. It’ll be just as long for my 2nd. I tell myself it’s a hobby, I’m learning a lot, it’ll be better in the long run, yada, yada. Don’t let imposter syndrome get you down like it did me.

I wonder if I should try morphing it into choose your own adventure book when I ask for peer reviews. Do people think that would be more palatable than a script full of forking decision tree notes? It feels like it would. #game #design #adventure #script

Oh great and powerful Internet Netizens, hear my plea! I’m working on a game. A point and click game. A murder mystery game. Starting with a script with an embedded player decision tree. The script reads much like a choose your own adventure book actually.

My last game grew organically from a random collection of ideas and basic concept. There was a lot of “Oh! That’ll be cool!” additions and rework. This time I’m spending the time up front to write a game design manual, script, and storyboards before I code.
