Near the top of the Mile stands a landmark of urbanism: Patrick Geddes’ Outlook Tower, which demonstrated his novel approach of urban planning through exhibits that brought visitors from a look at world cities upward to the final camera obscura view of Edinburgh

Good job SisterStL and several others who correctly guessed Edinburgh for this weeks puzzle. The Royal Mile connects castle to Parliament—to its north New Town w its axial 18th-c. planning. South lies old town pressed up against the hill on which the castle sits.

Sorry for pointing this out, but SecDef’s language reminds me a lot of the men-seeking-men personals that used to run in the SF Bay Guardian in the 1980s.

This date in secret history: the Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800)--whereby Spain quietly returned Louisiana (which it had governed, marginally for 40+ yrs.) to France. Three years later, France would sell its new possession to the US. (avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century...)

The unequal distribution shown on this table (visualcapitalist.com) is arguably more pronounced if you considernthe share of top-20% income that comes in the form of lower-taxed capital gains and inheritance wealth.

Frank Lloyd, he's Wright. I'll admit it. Median (not just mean) per capita income is indeed higher than ever. That said it's been a pretty steady climb, regardless of administration and not counting recessions and COVID.

Time to play Know Your Cities again. The image below doesn't include any edges, which creates a challenge. But there are topographical features, as well as a clear change in street plan on either side of a snaky street that runs across the center of photo. SO: Know your city?

Missed a big birthday Saturday, while traveling: Born in St. Louis, Oct. 26, 1888: T.S. Eliot, who later wrote that 'there is something in having passed one's childhood beside the big river, which is incommunicable to those people who have not. I consider myself fortunate to have been born here.'

Back to our Know Your Cities: you recall we were talking fascist architecture (wonder why...). You're looking at the Esposizione Universale Roma: EUR, outside Rome. Planned as celebration of Mussolini's rise and site of a world's fair (never held). 'Fascist' architecture isn't per se distinct.

$7.25 in 2009–when todays minimum wage was set—would be worth $11.32 in 2026. Today’s $7.25 would’ve been worth less than $5 in 2009. But then again, a billion doesn’t buy what it used to either. So we’re all hurting.

So much bad can come from the “well if you haven’t done anything wrong then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about” reasoning that’s used to justify initiatives like this. And they know it.

And like other recent critiques to be found in Atlantic, Bulwark, etc., the TPM piece forgets that US museums were BORN of “ideological capture.” It’s just that ideology could be dressed as fact, so long as collection, curators, and desired audiences were all aligned.

Some good things in this article, and some lame stuff too. But a) there IS no straight story of US (it’s an ongoing process of unresolved tensions), and b) museums aren’t books: they’re places to consider the rel. of objects to ideas and actions.

I get that tenure looks like an undeserved privilege. I get that schools need to stay in business. But beyond the simple contractual issue in play at New School, we‘re losing the conviction that long-term investments in learning are worthwhile.
