Why is the killing of a spider considered bad luck? Popular belief suggests it’s because they are great at pest control, but perhaps it is because the weaving of webs links them to the Fates. Be wary on your next encounter #SpookySunday

Bringing in some great reviews (see pic) and a #book just right for #spookyseason A collection of stories exploring the many ways we are #haunted May contain #ghosts CORPSE ROAD BLUES: amzn.eu/d/0j8ORPrx
Cover of Corpse Road Blues by Eric Nash.

Image depicts a procession of skeletons walking out of the winter woods and heading towards a distant city in the background underneath a dark sky, laden with storm clouds. 5 star review of Corpse Road Blues (shortened to fit Alt Text word count):

"I genuinely enjoyed each and every story. In fact it took me a long time to finish this book as I was eking it out and restricting myself not to read it all at once (unfortunately I don’t do this with chocolates), but alas all good things must come to an end.

This book is a modern collection of stories about ghosts and the things that haunt us and there’s a few factors that make this such a great collection, there are some really original ideas as well as new takes on more familiar tropes and these touch on a range of different social issues/themes plus the author has a distinctive voice that shines through all these stories. But, the two things that really elevate it for me are the descriptions of places which are so rich and evocative, and the dialogue, whether it’s between characters or inner monologues, the dialogue is authentic and makes the characters so believable and real.

It’s hard to pick a favourite (peanut butter cups or your own personal preference) as I enjoyed them all but, the story that was the absolute stand out for me is ‘On Midwinter Hill’. This is about a lonely single mother visiting her parent’s graves on Christmas Eve. The ideas in this story were so original and the description of the cemetery was really beautiful (I am a self confessed taphophile so this was perfect for me), and while the story was sad and touched on loss it was also shot through with bursts of humour which contrasted well. Also being able to sum up the essence of grief in one sentence is a testament to how good the writing is. This is one of the best short stories I have ever read.

Ironically, for stories of ghosts and hauntings they are so very human and so very full of heart. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this author.

There is an eeriness to Rutland Water (one of England's largest reservoirs) due to the remains of a village underneath the placid water. What secrets cling to those submerged walls? It reminded me of the novels, The Fisherman by Langan & A House at the Bottom of the Lake by Malerman. #SpookySunday

Rutland Water. On the right-hand side is the deconsecrated St Matthews Church, Normanton, built on the site of an earlier medieval church. In the foreground is the new shoreline revealed by the much-depleted water supply. Under a sunny October sky, the water appears a stunning blue.

This made my week. It's wonderful to know, not only is one's work being read, that it's appreciated by another reader. If you've enjoyed a book recently consider sharing the love by leaving a review somewhere. 🖤👻🖤👻🖤👻🖤👻🖤

The sacred chants and solemn prayers of monks long-dead chase the howling, whipping winds through the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. The monks themselves appear among throngs of tourists, or as spectres haunting holiday pics to be remembered in a digital age. #SpookySunday #ghosts

👋 #SpookySunday lot, Bull Bay Hotel, Porth Llechog, Anglesey, '22. At the time we were unaware of the many ghosts that were said to wander the rooms, but the creepiness of the place lingered in our bones. The hotel has been demolished, now holiday lets haunt the landscape. But what of the ghosts?
you are at the edge of the road, standing in front of old pallets on their ends blocking the immediate entrance through a latticed metal archway. Beyond, steps rise up toward an imposing ghostly-white building about 100m away, set high in a commanding position near the cliff edge.

#SpookySunday Sally in the Woods: a wooded stretch of the A363 near Bath, UK. It’s earned a grisly reputation as a ‘death’ road, due to rumours of a ghostly girl in white appearing in front of drivers. Another tale is of Sarah Gibson, a widow, and reputedly a witch, who lived alone in the woods.
