I’ve loved this movie since I saw it in TV with my Dad MANY years ago. (So, a soft spot and bias.) I think your assessment is spot on, but I also just love the bouncy lightness of it and the fact that the stakes are so low…making the “villain” ridiculous in exactly the right way.

I designed and taught a course called “Diplomacy, Information, and Cyber in the Global Information Environment.” I tried as has as one can to fight the acronym they chose: DCE (or “dice”). No one appreciates my efforts for the obvious alternative.

The percentages vary from year to year (ROTC and OTS/OCS are rheostats), and the answer depends on whether you count the non-line/direct commission numbers...but the Academies provide about 25% of commissions in a year in comparison to ROTC and OTS/OCS.

Had a weird conversation today. Passed a foundational text to someone in a PhD program who was looking for advice. Someone overheard, asked why that title was important. It sounded like X, which was their research. It is X. It’s fundamental to X. You’re stupid. I know what your “PhD” is worth.

The military are not “the best and the brightest,” no matter how much we say that. We are, at best, America. But it’s an America subjected to training, discipline, and selection. And our senior leadership are still just CEOs overseeing shitty returns and cashing out their stock options.

The point is to create opportunities to cull faculty perceived as politically disloyal (in a partisan/issue sense) without other substantial causes. This will become a cycle of partisan retribution that will destroy those institutions. Maybe the point. Probably the effect. Likely bad policy.

Fair. I used to leave bottled water with bags of Lipton on the window sill in my hooch at Al Udeid every day to have Sun Tea (“Tea is of paramount importance to the state; it must be studied.”) But we also had a cooler, cocktail kit & went to Doha for fresh limes. Barely deployed in those days. 🤣

I have a thought about @mls.bsky.social. The real difference between this & other leagues (with exceptions and on average) is not the players. It’s the officiating clown show, with @proreferees.bsky.social the lead clown. Many MLS players would survive in other leagues…none of our officials would.
