I bet they can’t beat $2.50 a day! Just thinking of how many times I’ve heard electeds talk about needing 100% farebox recovery while pointing to Uber as something better.

I came across this quote from Ulysses S Grant recently. It was from short remarks to a veterans group emphasizing free public schools as the most important thing to avoid a new civil war. Full context in alt text. Anyway. Always great to see Seattle leaders short change their commitments.
I do not bring into this assemblage politics, certainly not partisan politics, but it is a fair subject for soldiers in their deliberations to consider what may be necessary to secure the prize for which they battled in a republic like ours. Where the citizen is sovereign and the official the servant, where no power is exercised except by the will of the people, it is important that the sovereign — the people — should possess intelligence.

The free school is the promoter of that intelligence which is to preserve us as a free nation. If we are to have another contest in the near future of our national existence, I predict that the dividing line will not be Mason and Dixon's, but between patriotism and intelligence on the one side, and superstition, ambition, and ignorance on the other.

Now in this centennial year of our national existence, I believe it a good time to begin the work of strengthening the foundation of the house commenced by our patriotic forefathers one hundred years ago, at Concord and Lexington. Let us all labor to add all needful guarantees for the more perfect security of free thought, free speech, and free press, pure morals, unfettered religious sentiments, and of equal rights and privileges to all men, irrespective of nationality, color, or religion.

Encourage free schools, and resolve that not one dollar of money appropriated to their support, no matter how raised, shall be appropriated to the support of any sectarian school. Resolve that the State or Nation, or both combined, shall furnish to every child growing up in the land, the means of acquiring a good common-school education, unmixed with sectarian, pagan, or atheistic tenets. Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private school supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separate. With these safeguards, I believe the battles which created the Army of the Tennessee will not have been fought in vain.

One of my favorite examples to mock in this vein is (outgoing) Deschutes County Commissioner Tony Debone. Tech guy from Michigan, worked in Seattle area before settling in Hawaii -- and then finally found himself in wild, wild La Pine, Oregon. Pics are when he was first elected versus now.

Supposedly there are major changes coming to the transit system in less than two weeks but there’s still no detailed information available to the public about the actual changes. Instead we get advertising about Papa Muphy’s?! Why is a tax funded agency begging for a share of pizza sales??

That used to be the policy at CET but appears to no longer be the case. We stopped doing full body wraps not just because rider inconvenience but also the paltry revenue just wasn’t worth it once you factor in operational logistics and frequent damage on removal. Maybe Knute is overpaying though…

Iran remembers. They made postage stamps! The stamp reads: "Failure of US military aggression against Iran, Tabas 1980" That was one of Delta Force's very first missions. Americans died not at enemy hands, but in a clusterfuck. The Ayatollah said it was stopped by an act of God.

It seems they use 2 euro cent coins to make the German version of elongated pennies now but it was 5 pfennig coins when I was a kid there. Anyway, even boring cities like Dusseldorf have TV towers on the skyline! Functional and a minor tourist attraction in one.

I have to use Facebook for work and the Reels section at the top of the feed keeps pushing AI videos of ICE being arrested. Or in this case “FICE” While we hear pleas to turn down the temperature, Mark Zuckerberg is over here handing out matches.

Nor asking for… Knopp is very much not repentant, nor anti Trump. He is a true believer extremist despite wearing a suit. For a look at his family values, his wife (who he hired as a legislative aide) celebrated SCOTUS overturning Roe by saying it was a good day to fill up her liberal tears cup.

I’d love to run a Fight Club type op where instead of replacing airplane safety cards we just insert Trump’s real, uncut words in places that his supporters would have to confront. Chamber luncheon brochure on every table? Open it up and you see parts of that rant.

No amendment needed! This was the top priority outlined in CET's TMP. Also named in Bend's TSP! Targeted to roll out in near term with existing funding while Rt8, etc were mid-long term goals to come with expansion funds. I know Bend grows fast, but all of this was envisioned in the plan.

Walmart is the most used bus stop in Bend, Oregon. It beats the next runner up by a whopping 60% more boardings. This stop is away from the store, on the main drag, in a small island in a gas station lot, surrounded by busy driveways on each side. You have to walk in traffic either direction.

“…and a lack of viable public transport…” Notice that word: viable. This is an advocacy project in England, but the sentiment is common. Just having a line on a map doesn’t mean the service actually works for people.

A day trip toward the coast has lots of options too. From Portland, I'd recommend a stop in Astoria with scenic hikes around Cape Disappointment. See Deadmans Cove, a WWII fort, and the area where Lewis and Clark saw the Pacific. Ecola State Park and Cannon Beach are another good option.
