I accidentally pointed the 140 foot dish at the Sun one time - and got all sorts of wild signals until I realized my mistake. When you are focused on galaxies it is easy to forget those nearby things that get in the way. 😉

While his mountain of horrible personal conduct could fill multiple books, one fact in particular stands out: A year ago, Musk’s actions directly led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. He did it knowingly. And, worse — gleefully. Read more: www.theverge.com/tech/949259/...

Social security is repaying our money that we paid into the system. And if you add up all those funds from 5 million expats it is a tiny fraction of what Trump and the Republican donors are moving to offshore accounts each month. They are not bothering to hide as they loot the country in full view.

I am always amazed at thinking these giant structures and mountain ranges were formed in less than an hour. Molten rock leaping into the sky. Billions of years ago.

I love the book “A City on Mars” - very informative and funny too! I have been big fans of the Weinersmiths for years. (I read SMBC every day) - I don’t agree with all the conclusions in the book but they definitely cover all the important topics and the references are great.

With the recent X class solar flare, it is interesting to learn about contingency plans for Artemis II mission - basically ’empty the Orion storage lockers, crawl inside, and wait out the solar storm’. No warning with gamma rays, but you can try to hide from the 10 MeV protons that arrive later.

I’m sure the CIA is trying to make a children’s ‘picture book’ to explain the implications to Trump. (They long ago gave up writing the President’s Daily Brief in text.) But the White House is not listening.

Eric Dahlstrom @ericld.bsky.social · 17/01/2026

Remember that if Trump attacks Greenland in two weeks, Artemis II will be cancelled, along with the rest of the Artemis program (it is a joint U.S. Europe Canada Japan program). Just a small taste of the devastation to the U.S. that Trump will cause.

Wow. Not only is that fast spinning asteroid a solid object, but the 0.5 rpm spin with a radius of 250 m means it has an acceleration of about 0.1 g away from the surface. This is like the artificial gravity spun up asteroids in “The Expanse”. Very bizarre.

Interesting article. But how does it change the story? The Nobel committee ignored Franklin. For decades the public version of the story has ignored her. Glad that the people working at the time were aware of her contribution, but her role has certainly been pushed aside.

I have loved planetariums since I was young. I am very impressed by the modern ones (for example the Digistar 6 projectors) that can show the 3D models of the solar system, Milky Way, and other galaxies. Only some shows show the real power of illustrating the astronomical data.

Shocking that while we are horrified at the illegal tactics used by the anonymous armed gangs claiming to be “ICE” - Republicans in Congress just voted to fund ICE at $150B - about $1000 per taxpayer - to create more armed gangs and concentration camps.
