Rain woke me up in Pasadena. They predicted some chance of rain today, but it was strong rain for 20 minutes. Radar map from Apple Weather app.

The NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) satellite imaged Venezuela on June 25 with L-band (24 cm wavelength) synthetic aperture radar (SAR). The NISAR Urgent Response system was activated and made an interferogram (InSAR) with the previous pass on June 13. Colleague […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Map of north-central Venezuela with NISAR surface displacements shown in color. The NISAR swath is 240 km wide. Colors run from red to white to blue as described in the post. InSAR only measures displacement on land, so ocean and lakes have no measurement. The background image of the map is from Google satellite images with natural color on land and bathymetry in the ocean.

The Vantor company (formerly Maxar) used one of their Worldview satellites to capture a picture of the NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) satellite in orbit. The large radar reflector (12 meters or 38 feet wide) has a mesh surface that appears gold and the solar panels on […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Satellite in the black of space. The main satellite has a large cubic shape, with solar panels extending out on two sides. There is a long boom extending up from the satellite holding the 12-meter wide circular radar reflector structure that has a smooth surface mesh.

@sundogplanets That is really interesting to see those structures near Al Hait. I did not find the spot you showed, but I found many near the city of Al Hait. It looks like they are built out of basalt rubble and are located on or near a large basalt lava […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Satellite image from Google Earth showing area about 2 km or 1.3 miles across near city of Al Hait with several funeral strutures aligned in various directions. Each has a circular feature at one end and then a long linear or very narrow triangular feature extending away from the circle. Most of the circles have an additional mound in the center of the circle. The features are all made out of black rocks that appear to be basalt.

The bad air has moved inland since last night and the air quality in Pasadena is worse this morning. New map at 10 AM PDT from PurpleAir.
This map shows the bad air quality has moved northward and is now worse over a broad swath from Santa Monica to Pasadena at 10:17 AM PDT. Values are between 150 and 200 in this swath. The central and southern parts of the LA Basin and Orange County now have good air quality.

There is little breeze in the LA area, except near the coast, so most of the LA basin has horrible air quality at 11 PM on the Fourth of July due to all the fireworks, as usual. Pasadena and adjacent cities decided to use drone light shows instead of […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Map of the Los Angeles area and northern Orange County from PurpleAir sensors, showing the air quality ratings over the central LA basin ranging from about 200 to over 400 (extremely unhealthy). The coast west of LA is better due to sea breeze, and the Pasadena area has values from 80 to 150. The bad air extends southeast into Orange County.

NASA-funded ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) telescope in Chile first detected interstellar comet that has now been named 3I/ATLAS on July 1, 2025. The object was then found in images from other telescopes going back to June 14 that […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Here is a photo of one of the NISAR banners now flying around JPL, a sign that the launch is approaching. #NISAR #NASA #ISRO #SAR
Photo of a banner hanging from a light pole. The banner has an artistic figure showing a beam of radar shining on Earth mountains, glaciers, lakes, and forests in shades of purple and pink. Text says NISAR Revealing Earth’s Changing Surface. Behind the pole is a metal and glass building and I the distance the San Gabriel Mountains.

NASA-ISRO Mission Will Map Farmland From Planting to Harvest. The NASA-ISRO SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellite will be launched soon and acquire radar over the entire land area of the Earth (except a few places near the poles). One objective is mapping […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Data gathered in 2017 by the European Sentinel-1 SAR satellite program shows changes to croplands in the region southeast of Florida’s Lake Okeechobee. Colors in the fields indicate various crops in different parts of their growth and harvest cycles. NISAR will gather similar data in L- and S-band radar frequencies. EOS-RS Damage Proxy Map: California, USA, Wildfires, 9 Jan 2025, v0.9

The Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS) created this preliminary Damage Proxy Map (DPM) depicting areas that are likely damaged in California, USA, due to several wildfires in early Jan 2025. This map was derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) before (11 Sep 2024 to 28 Dec 2024) and during (9 Jan 2025) the event.

The map covers area indicated by a white polygon. Damage is shown by colored pixels of 30m in size, where yellow to red indicates increasingly significant ground surface change before and after the event. Preliminary validation was conducted using news reports and ground-level imagery and videos in selected areas. This map should be used as a guidance to identify damaged areas, and may be less reliable over vegetated or mountainous areas. Scattered pixels may be false positives, and a lack of color may not mean no damage.

The product contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2024-2025), processed by ESA and analyzed by the Earth Observatory of Singapore - Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS).

@ai6yr Fortunately, where I live in Pasadena seems to be below AQI 200, although there is a huge variation in readings from PurpleAir sensors. I wonder if some are actually inside buildings.
Map of Pasadena with PurpleAir Air Quality Index readings. Some in the north and east are over 200. In the south and west, they are about 150, but a few are near 20.

Currently, the evacuation orders have extended over a large area north, west, and east of Pasadena. I live a mile south of the 210 freeway in Pasadena, so we are not in the evacuation zone or the warning area. #EatonFire Map from Watch Duty showing evacuation area from La Cañada to Monrovia
