Yes! This game is phenomenal. Very excited to have a Pax game that my wife will play with me.

Just rewatched this one recently. I was going to watch the new show, but instead I just put the original on since I hadn’t my seen it in years. Every bit as good as I remember. I agree with your take that it feels like a prequel. I wonder if the show continues the plot further.

Watching Ghost in the Shell while I futz around in Godot and learn how to write code is making me feel like a real console cowboy. 🤖🤠

Woah, didn’t expect to see Wendell Berry on the site where I go for board game news! The Unsettling of America was a formative text for me in my young adulthood.

I love how thematic and non-gamified those quest clues are. And a 5 min teach? That’s the dream!

I agree with others that either can work, it just depends on what kind of game you want to make! A big consideration for me would be the theming of the game (if that is already set). Does dice drafting make sense thematically? Do the dice represent a limited resource that folks fight over?

Can’t wait to hear about King Ludd! I once had an idea for a Luddite game and Yoni was super helpful in pointing me to relevant research. Such an interesting historical moment, and one that has important lessons for our current time. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Out of Sorts is coming soon! I trust Connor to make amazing games, but it’s great to read Dan’s stamp of approval as well. The first edition has brought me many hours of delight and hilarious frustration. I can’t wait to add this new edition to my collection!

Games can be games without a hierarchical result. We must broaden traditional definitions of tabletop games to give designers the agency and opportunity to express themselves in new, exciting, and challenging ways. We should be creating new ways to explore artistic mediums, not shutting them down.

After almost 2 months waiting in the pending queue and a contentious submission process, Pax Playground is finally on BoardGameGeek. Despite having a ruleset and player objectives, BGG didn’t want to list the game because the ending doesn’t explicitly identify players as winners or losers.

I’m enamored with Wingspan Pocket by @elizhargrave.bsky.social. My family loved the original, but as we get older and add kids into the mix, we don’t get it to the table anymore. This version is such a wonderful distillation of what makes Wingspan great, while fitting into life much easier. Brava!
Family gathered around a table playing Wingspan Pocket. A kid is on his iPad, but I promise he put it down right after this photo was taken and got involved in the game. His screen time is responsibly monitored and managed. Don’t judge.

I think I remember hearing about this set that Mario and Luigi are king and queen, while Peach and Daisy are bishops. So at least it’s got that going for it.

I’ll give my experience as one small data point in support of this. Ever since Dan Thurot wrote an article about my game, and others have shared their aesthetic appreciation of it, I’ve been encouraged to shift my design goals away from commercial success and towards artistic expression.

Yay! Glad to hear it. Wholesome is definitely the vibe I was going for. I intentionally don’t address that in the rulebook because I want to let people decide whether or not to share their ideal selves with each other. So however you played it was the right way!

That being said, this arc happens mostly within each round, not the overall structure of the game itself. So maybe not as clear of a structural arc as Kubb.

Eric Dittmore @ericdittmore.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
Early shots are meant to set up blocks to get in the way of your opponent, while later shots are trying to knock off their stones and position yours on the button. The purpose of an early shot and late shot are totally different as the position of early stones affects the strategy of later throws.

I feel like most sports have an arc to them, in the sense that gameplay and player interactions change from beginning to middle and end. And there is certainly narrative arc to most, if not all, sports. Going with your definition of a structural arc, it’s definitely more rare. Maybe curling?

I always double-code my games, but I’m realizing that I kinda use that as an excuse to not think about a color-blind friendly palette. Double-coding is great, but it can take a second longer to parse than color. So why not both?

Very excited for this series. Connor was a huge inspiration to me when I decided to take Adulting the the indie market last year. Not all games need to have huge print runs, or even be published at all! I can play music for the sake of the art, why not game design too?!
