Just noticed that long ago @astro.build has fixed JSX Look at this
In Astro "id={id}" verbose JSX syntax can be replaced by "{id}"

Just updated the Devographics surveys app to #NextJS 15! Smooth upgrade thanks to codemods. Biggest challenge was #React 19 ref, but we managed to keep running on React-Bootstrap, it's still very well maintained. Don't forget to take #StateOfJS 2024! 📊 survey.devographics.com/survey/state...

Holly molly @bolt.new I thought I was being smart pushing the thing as far as I could and that it would break and here's the result The model only tripped on forgetting a default export (kind of mistake I would do lol) The image export does work This is just insane

Seems like @bolt.new speaks a perfect French 🍷 I am using it to generate demo apps for my Astro.js training, it's the perfect use case for app generation with AI

I am preparing a new Next.js interactive tutorial showing how to prevent SSRF attacks. But it seems that Copilot already knows better!!
Copilot detected an SSRF request in a POST endpoint that runs unsecure fetch calls

Most developers like early preview, don't they? So I'll make developers happy by sharing an early preview of my latest tutorial about proper integration of React with Astro : "Using React Context in Astro - with Nanostores" astropatterns-git-drafts-lbke.vercel.app/p/react-love... #react #nextjs

Streaming a big file with #Nextjs , the right and the wrong way: - the first spike is the right way, using streams - the second spike is the wrong way, copying the file in memory and then streaming it Want to learn the right solution? Read NextPatterns ⬇️ nextpatterns.dev/p/gems/route...

Next article incoming: "what is a layout in React?" It's not that easy!

Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 05/03/2024
This works ok for values that are shared across requests However, I don't think there is an equivalent to React "cache" function, which is scoped to the current user request. So keep in mind this pattern works for shared values: theme, i18n tokens, sitemap, but not for user-specific values.
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 05/03/2024
Finally, I can use the sitemap value, and find the right page using the current `Astro.params`! In Next.js, this is roughly equivalent to using "unstable_cache", that is shared across requests
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 05/03/2024
I initialize the value from the page, using Astro.props This way, I can keep this shared value in memory, and get it from components that are rendered by this page, without needing to use props
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 05/03/2024
To avoid that, I define a separate `sitemap.ts` file with a top-level variable, and I get/set it using functions
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 05/03/2024
In the State of JS result app, pages are entirely defined by a big yaml file This sitemap file is actually an array, each value corresponds to a specific page So, for the page "/tshirt", I'd like to get the corresponding configuration

Astro set:html directive let's you craft CSS string templates like Styled Components I am trying to figure how to simplify this syntax even more
010
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
The theme is giving me a hard time but after all, CSS is just about managing some strings right, so I can craft something that *behaves* like Styled Components theming system quite easily, if I respect the same shape for theme
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
The PageHeader is the first component I meet, and it comes with a good surprise: it uses Styled Component, a CSS-in-JS libs, while CSS-in-JS is notoriously not compatible with server-only rendering because of its runtime requirements! I need to read some docs about styling in Astro
Component using styled-components non-trivial attrs function

Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
To avoid loading track of my progress, I copy-paste the React version in the front matter, comment it, and un comment one-line at a time
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
In our current app, all pages are generated via a top-level generic "PageTemplate" component. So the migration for React to Astro consists in pulling the string from there, migrating one component at the time starting with this PageTemplate
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
Today, I wanted to focus on migrating our React components, that are old-school client components, towards Astro islands, which are very similar to React Server Components. First thing, it seems I need one component per file .astro are not exactly JS files so you can't export from there

Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 01/03/2024
Let's start with a non-technical aspect. Working on an open source project like Devographics surveys brings the invaluable possibility to share industrial-grade knowledge to other developers! So in addition to these threads, I am going to craft a complete case study for my blog: www.ericburel.tech

The risk of using canary versions of Next.js 😅
000
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 28/02/2024
Pro-tip: 404 pages should lead to relevant content Just update the "not found" page on my blog (using Next.js) so it lists the latest articles www.ericburel.tech/404

Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
And I could render my first component! I noticed the layout wouldn't render two children if I move the "PageTemplate" at the same level as the "main" tag, but gave no errors Like a good photographer, I need to study how composition works in Astro
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
Now my setup is correct and I evolve in the secure realm of type-safety, back to my component. So in Astro the JSX template and the JS code are split into two parts, but aside from that it's all alike to a React Server Component Want something fancy? The doc is translated in French 🥖👨‍🍳

Which in turns prompts the need to properly type "Astro.props", seems I need to call an inference utility type InferGetStaticProps<typeof getStaticPaths>" docs.astro.build/en/guides/ty...
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
I'll get back at this in a sec because in the meantime I received important informations from the nice people of Astro Discord server (thanks Oliver): in getStaticPaths, I can also pass some props, so I don't need to fetch the survey site map twice, I can get it from "Astro.props" Fancy 🤵‍♂️🍹
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
Let's import it as is in the Astro app. It's actually my fist ".astro" component 🎉 ! And it seems I need more than a simple copy-paste 😂
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
Nah nevermind actually a search telles me that the "ShareBlockTemplate" is something specifically related to open graph image generation, we have a way to turn each part of a page into it's own page and screenshot it What I want is the "PageTemplate" instead
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
I found my goal for today: aside from cleanup, I'd like to render something useful, like the home page content. Looking at the Gatsby setup, the function "createPage" seems to be the one associating a path and a React component www.gatsbyjs.com/docs/referen...

Checking how the development instance works... bad surprise, my import alias didn't actually work 😂 I don't get what's wrong, need to read more docs... In the past in Next we also had to tweak the compiler in addition to the tsconfig, maybe it's similar here? docs.astro.build/en/guides/al...
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
I have some code referencing environment variables to get the current survey edition unique identifier, like "js2022" for instance. Let's abstract this a bit by crafting a centralized "publicConfig.ts" In Next we have to prefix env vars with NEXT_PUBLIC to use them client-side but not here it seems
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
Now time to import it. Out-of-the-box, you have to use relative imports like "../../../../fetchers/surveyWithSitemap.ts", that's dull Hopefully Astro supports import aliases, it just needs a line in the tsconfig.json docs.astro.build/en/guides/ty... Now "@/fetchers/surveyWithSitemap" will work
100
Eric Burel @ericburel.tech · 22/02/2024
I've crafted a separate file "src/fetcher/surveyWithSitemap", so I can import it and use it in getStaticPaths safely, and again in the actual page to get the data I am using an "astro" prefix in the function name: this way I can tell exactly which functions returns data that are safe to render!
