First I heard that Thomson Reuters employees were organizing against their company's complicity with ICE was when this NYT reporter called me to ask if I knew my research had sparked their effort 😭 www.nytimes.com/2026/03/11/t...

How has Minneapolis remained so non-violent in the face of Trump's horrific provocations? JaNaé Bates Imari explained to @thedigradio.bsky.social how MN's deep progressive orgs set a tone of non-violent discipline for the movement as a whole

Late-night protests at ICE's hotels can be extremely effective — but not if they damage property or harass staff. Doing so only plays into the hands of corporate leaders, ICE, and Trump

The @sunrisemvmt.bsky.social Twin Cities hub has succeeded in getting multiple hotels in Minneapolis to stop housing ICE — now it's up to us to spread this tactic nationwide

If you make noise outside hotels ICE is staying at, these agents won’t want to stay there and hotels won’t want to house them If enough hotels don’t want to house ICE, then they don’t have somewhere to stay

Minneapolis has developed an effective new tactic to disrupt ICE and break companies away: Make a ton of late-night noise outside the hotels ICE agents are staying at Minneapolis organizer Aru Shiney-Ajay explains why this tactic has been so powerful — and how people nationwide can do the same 🧵

We are a Left with ballots cast but few shop floors won, with more cultural importance than class power For Zohran's election to start a lasting transformation we have to acknowledge an uncomfortable truth: despite our impressive electoral reach, our movement’s roots are still shallow

Cultural-social events are crucial for building a mass socialist left. One lost example of this: Milwaukee's sewer socialists in 1925 organized a children's orchestra competition on a Friday evening at Lake Park, attended by 5,000 parents and community members

If we actually want Zohran to drop Tisch — and we're not just looking to bolster our leftist cred — the crucial thing to do is to start organizing more outside of leftist echo-chambers
081
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Contrary to claims that Zohran "betrayed his mandate" by appointing Tisch, he publicly made that promise many months ago
150
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Not only has the Left fail to push for a plausible alternative to Tisch, it's bad tactics to focus on removing Tisch now, instead of when the decision was actually being made
140
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
It'll take a lot more deep organizing and lot more political experience to turn around public opinion on policing — we shouldn't pretend like most people are already with us
130
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
The recent campaign to drop Tisch is overly focused on what Zohran should do, without answering the more important question of what *we* should do to build a movement powerful enough to confront the NYPD

Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 08/12/2025
Critics of Zohran's decision to keep Tisch haven't yet provided compelling counters to the points made in this piece 🧵

Like Zohran, Bobby Seale campaigned in a suit when he ran for mayor in 1973. He ran to win — and did his best to counteract smears from the establishment that he and the Black Panthers were impractical radicals

Hoda and Bashir lay out some useful ideas for a mass-action approach to Palestine solidarity here
030
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Far from downplaying the urgency or righteousness of Palestine solidarity, being strategic about how we fight is key if we actually want to build enough power to force the US government to cut off funds for Israel — not just "speak truth to power"
120
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
It's good to advocate for our positions But when assessing where to focus on in the fight for Palestine (or anything else), we should always first address the strategic questions posed by Jane McAlevey If a campaign doesn't move the needle on these points, it's better to find an alternative
120
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Jane McAlevey was right: we should focus on where the "payoff of our precious hard work will be the most significant" Don't see how the far-left of the US Palestine solidarity movement's focus on targeting pro-Palestine electeds like Zohran is actually strategic or effective
120
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
It's good to pressure Zohran (& all electeds), the question is over what & how Is our main approach to speak truth to power? Or to organize around strategic mass-based fights? Lots to learn from Jane McAlevey on this 🧵

It IS crucial for Zohran to deliver his agenda, but delivering policy on its own rarely does as much as we'd hope in boosting support for a politician or party Social science suggests that party-building and on-the-ground organization is just as crucial
0203
Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
One key thing Zohran can learn from Milwaukee's sewer socialists is that to deliver transformative reforms you need to lean on mass movement pressure

Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 24/11/2025
Socialists in the US today have a lot more to learn from Victor Berger than Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, or Chairman Mao

It's good that James Carville is now calling for economic populism — but our side also needs credible, authentic messengers for this stance Nobody will buy it if Kamala Harris or Gavin Newsom suddenly start talking like Bernie

Yesterday's Trump meeting tanked Elise Stefanik's case vs Governor Hochul That's great for NY because Stefanik is horrible, and also because—without a serious threat to her right—Hochul will now have a harder time rejecting Zohran's agenda in the name of electability

Unlike subsequent historians, the NAACP praised sewer socialist leader Victor Berger Its condolence letter lauded "the very broad and sympathetic views Mr. Berger always had regarding us as a race, the unbiased attitude of his paper, & his interest in the welfare of all."

Milwaukee's Garveyite leaders such as Carlos Del Ruy & Reverend Ernest Bland not only joined the Socialist Party, they even campaigned in Black communities for working-class white Socialist candidates vs middle-class Blacks

Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
Victor Berger insisted that because of racial divisions & hatred, "the American proletariat is surely more poorly organized than any working class" Black workers responded by consistently voting Berger back to Congress — and voting Mayor Hoan back to Milwaukee City Hall

Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
As a congressman in the 1920s, Victor Berger took the lead in fighting all immigration restrictions, he explicitly included Blacks in his pension legislation, and he proposed bill after bill to ban the KKK & lynching nationwide

Eric Blanc @ericblanc.bsky.social · 20/11/2025
It's true Berger wrote a few indefensibly racist things early in his career, when Milwaukee was over 99% white But once large numbers of Blacks arrived after WWI, Berger made a U-Turn & became one of the most high-profile anti-racist whites in America

Sewer socialist mayor Dan Hoan joined the NAACP in 1920, banned the KKK, boosted efforts to provide loans to Blacks to buy homes across the city, & received the strong backing of Black voters & Black organizations
