Despite pledges made by many C40 cities , urban methane emissions grew by around 10% between 2020 and 2023, according to satellite-based measurements. Cities struggle to reduce these emissions because their specific sources are not well characterized. In PNAS: ow.ly/8wki50YKEWY

The study uses a satellite-based tracer–tracer analysis between methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO) over US cities to calculate urban CH4 emissions. Tracer–tracer analysis leverages the concentration ratio between two trace gases to infer the emissions of one trace gas using the better-known emissions of the other. The graphs show annual enhancement ratios, methane CH4,enh:COenh, and observed CH4 emissions for two cities in each region. The cities selected are among the top contributors to the region’s urban CH4 emissions.
