It is Banned Book Week, and I want to acknowledge my first book, Identity Affirming Classrooms: Spaces that Center Humanity. I will never forget the first time an institution told me that my book could not be used because of anti-CRT policies.

I am so grateful for everyone who contributed and supported my journey. This book unpacks the language of DEI, the benefits and harm when executed poorly, coalition-building strategies, Title IX and other non-discrimination policies, and ways to combat resistance.

My second book, The DEI Practitioner’s Handbook: A Guide for School and District Leaders in Pursuit of Educational Justice, will release in September. I started writing this book while serving as a Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer in 2020, and I’m excited to share it with the world.

The work of creating equitable environments doesn’t cease just because someone says DEI is dead. As educators, we still have intentional work to do.

Indiana HB 1394, proposes to turn schools into agents of ICE. Schools will no longer have refugee or immigrant student populations, because our lawmakers do not care for their existence nor want to educate them.
Authorizes a school corporation to deny an immigrant student enrollment in a school operated by the school corporation if the school corporation determines by a preponderance of the evidence that the immigrant student is present in the United States in violation of law. Requires the attorney general to defend the school corporation in any cause of action brought against the school corporation for denying an immigrant student enrollment. Requires a school corporation to annually report the number of immigrant students present in the United States in violation of law who were enrolled in a school operated by the school corporation

“Beloved community is formed not by the eradication of difference but by its affirmation, by each of us claiming the identities and cultural legacies that shape who we are and how we live in the world.” bell hooks It’s hard to believe she left this world 3 years ago today.

“The heart of justice is truth telling, seeing ourselves and the world the way it is rather than the way we want it to be. More than ever before we, as a society, need to renew a commitment to truth telling.” While existing in an era of truth decay, I’m holding on to the wisdom of bell hooks.

“You’ve got to tell the world how to treat you. If the world tells you how you are going to be treated, you are in trouble.” James Baldwin left this world 37 years ago today, but his wisdom lives and continuously soothes my soul.

“Teaching comes with many challenges while working in unjust systems. School and district leaders cannot tell teachers to indulge in “self-care” with the belief that encouragement alone makes their presence in dysfunctional systems better.” www.edweek.org/leadership/o...
