#nature #photography #birds #LEO #longearedowl #owl Long-eared Owls sitting in a pine tree - Description in alt text Also in alt text, my rant about yesterdays murder of Nicole Good, 10 blocks from us.
Yesterday, the orange fascists stormtroopers murdered a mother of 3, the back of her car full toys... after just dropping off her child at school.

The fourth reich is calling her a terrorist.

This is the end of democracy as we knew it, and the full fledged fascist regime we feared.

Their lies are truth, our truth is their terrorism.

I wish there was a button I could push, a lever I could shift, that could change all that.

In the meantime...

I took more photos of the Long-eared owls over lunch.

Take care my friends, and take care of those around you, keep each other safe.

Their facial disc tends to be pale ochraceous tawny, rimmed black with relatively short eyebrows that are marked whitish or absent entirely of markings. The erectile ear-tufts are prominent, being colored mainly blackish-brown with tawny edges. The upperparts are ochraceous-tawny, finely peppered with dusky spots and blackish streaks on a grey "veil", while the crown is finely mottled to dusky. The nape and hindneck bear dusky shaft-streaks with the feather outer webs of the scapulars being whitish, forming a row across the shoulder. Primaries basally are uniformly ochraceous-tawny, distally barred light and dark, while the secondaries are barred ochraceous and dusky. The tail is typically tawny with a greyish wash, overlaid with 6-8 very narrow dark brown bars. The underparts have a base colour of ochre, with the foreneck and upper breast marked with blackish-brown streaks; these become paler below and marked with dusky shaft-streaks and narrow cross-bars. The underwing has distinctive barring and dark comma-like markings at the wrist

#nature #photography #birds #owls Long-eared Owl - Description in alt text This photo was taken minutes ago, on my lunch break, LOL. Hope everyone is healthy and happy, and may your New year be wonderful in every way.
The long-eared Owl is a slim and long winged owl with erectile ear tufts, which are positioned closer to the center of the head than in many other types of owl. The purposes of ear tufts are not definitively known and are present in about half of living owls. A theory amongst biologists and ornithologists is that ear tufts could be a means of intraspecies communication of intent and mood.

In general coloration, the long-eared owl is a hue of ochraceous-tawny with a grayish or brownish wash variably manifesting. The base color is overlaid with variable blackish vertical streaks (and occasionally spots), which are more apparent about the wings and back. The scapulars are marked whitish, which provide further contrast when seen against the base color and blackish markings.

#nature #photography #birds #hawk #redtailhawk Red-tail Hawk sitting on a branch - Description in alt text
Hello all! Hope everyone is healthy and happy! I have been too distracted lately, and not a lot of great shot to share.

So these shots are a few "Okay" images captured over the last month.

When Sky and I returned home this morning, after our walk in nature...

I met my wife in front of our house, where she told me there was a Red-tailed hawk at the end of the block.

I figured that by the time I got there, it would be gone, I was delighted to be wrong!

It must have just finished a meal, because this crazy squirel kept moving closer to it!! At one point the Red-tail seemed to be talking to it, like "Really?? If I wasn't full, I would eat your sassy butt!!"

The red-tailed hawk is a large, powerful raptor known for its broad wings, distinctive reddish-brown tail, and soaring flight. They are a common sight throughout North America, inhabiting a variety of open and semi-open habitats. Adults have a mottled brown back and wings, a lighter, streaked underbelly, and a reddish-brown tail. Their size and plumage vary slightly by subspecies and geographic location. Hello all! I love Crows! Lately I have not seen much worthy of capture or sharing...

But here are a couple shots of Crows, I thought were... interesting?

Crows are large, intelligent, all-black birds known for their loud "caw" calls, adaptability, and social behavior, found globally in diverse habitats from forests to cities; they have strong bills, stout bodies, and fan-shaped tails, are omnivores, use tools, recognize faces, and can form huge communal roosts, making them one of the most clever bird families.

Walking Sky at a nearby state park, we came across a Barred Owl. Not a great shot, but I thought I would share it.

Barred Owls are mottled brown and white overall, with dark brown, almost black, eyes. The underparts are mostly marked with vertical brown bars on a white background, while the upper breast is crossed with horizontal brown bars. The wings and tail are barred brown and white.

Hello all! Hope everyone is healthy and happy! I have been too distracted lately, and not a lot of great shot to share.

So these shots are a few "Okay" images captured over the last month.

In these two shot we see a Gull that caught a tiny Catfish? Then a larger Gull stole it? Seems a familiar story...

Adult common gulls are 40–46 cm (16–18 in) long and a wingspan of 100–115 cm (39–45 in), noticeably smaller than the herring gull and slightly smaller than the ring-billed gull. It is further distinguished from the ring-billed gull by its shorter, more tapered bill, which is a more greenish shade of yellow and is unmarked during the breeding season. The body is grey above and white below. Hello all! Hope everyone is healthy and happy! I have been too distracted lately, and not a lot of great shot to share.

#nature #photography #birds #downywoodpecker Downy Woodpecker - Description in alt text
I keep achieving self imposed goals for nature photography.

I have many crapy photos of Downy Woodpeckers, yesterday I finally had the opportunity to capture some reasonable quality images of this bird, in the golden hour!

Adult downy woodpeckers are the smallest of North America's woodpeckers, but there are many smaller species elsewhere, especially the piculets. The downy woodpecker is mainly black on the upperparts and wings, with a white back, throat and belly and white spotting on the wings. There is one white bar above the eye, and one below. They have a black tail with white outer feathers barred with black. Adult males have a red patch on the back of the head whereas juvenile males

#nature #photography #birds #cedarwaxwing Cedar Waxwings - Description in alt text
I have not had anything great, nature photo related, to post in awhile.

I take my camera on every walk with Sky, twice a day.

Yesterday we were walking along the creek near Nokomis, when I heard this wonderful cacophony of bird calls.... my Merlin app told me I was near, among others, Cedar Waxwings!

I looked around, and sure enough, there were dozens!! Now this was magical because in my 60 years of wandering, I was not aware of these gorgeous birds. This year when I became aware of them, I set out to capture photos of them. Yesterday was the first time I got reasonable shots.

Here are a few. The one I love is of the couple. These two would bounce back and forth between being intimately close, then a little apart. they kept trading this tiny twig (Not nesting season!) back and forth, like they were sharing gifts!Sometime it looked like they were kissing. Whatever the reason, it was a sweet exchange to watch.Cedar waxwings are medium-sized birds approximately 6–7 in (15–18 cm) long and weighing roughly 30 g (1 oz). Wingspan ranges from 8.7 to 11.8 in (22 to 30 cm).[8] They are smaller and browner than their close relative, the Bohemian waxwing (which breeds farther to the north and west). Their markings are a "silky, shiny collection of brown, gray, and lemon-yellow, accented with a subdued crest, rakish black mask, and brilliant-red wax droplets on the wing feathers."[9] These droplets may be the same colour as the madrone berries they are known to eat.Cedar waxwings are medium-sized birds approximately 6–7 in (15–18 cm) long and weighing roughly 30 g (1 oz). #nature #photography #birds #raptors #release Raptor release - Carpenter Nature Center - Description in alt text
Saturday we drove out of the city to the Carpenter Nature Center, to watch Raptor releases!

They released 4 birds that day, 2 Broad-winged Hawks, 1 Red-tailed Hawk and an Eagle.

Of the first three, I only got a couple decent shots, the Eagle just looked so awkward running, lol.

Lessons learned....

1) Don't sit too close!! Last year I sat way too close, and got no good shots.

2) Don't sit too far away!! Yeah.. this year too far away... the birds were so small and fast, I missed out.

Oh well, next year for sure!! As with so many things, find the center!

I did get some great closeups of the captive raptors. Unfortunately for them, they are permanent residents.

Lucky for us, they are beautiful and closeup!

The photos are of several people, some park employees & volunteers, in green shirts, others are public. They are on a wooden platform. They have a table on which they place various soft animal crates. In these shots, the various birds are flying out of the crates, into the blue sky of freedom!Saturday we drove out of the city to the Carpenter Nature Center, to watch Raptor releases!

She recovered like a champ, and today the stitches come out!

NO MORE CONE OF SHAME!!!

She will be so happy to have things back to normal.

Of course we spoiled her the whole time.

Since this weekend was also her "Gotcha" day, from husky rescue...

She got her own steak!!

Merlin got some too.

Hope everyone and their companions are healthy and happy!!

Here is my lovely blonde haired, blue eyed walking companion.

Sky and I walk each day, twice a day.

During the week, mornings are "Maintenance walks". Evenings, weather permitting, are longer and more leisurely.

Weekends are adventures!!

Here we see Sky, patiently waiting for me to "Get up and go!"

Sky is my nature guide and partner. I love to see the world through her eyes.

Over the years we have developed our own language. I try to give Sky as much input as time and situations allow.

She will let me know when she wants to go a different way, or take the car. When appropriate, I am delighted to comply with her wishes.

Sky knows I will patiently wait while she checks her Pee-mail, or is stalking prey...

I know Sky will be as patient as she can, when I am taking pictures.

Together we hunt wildlife. All Sky want's is recognition for spotting critters, which I always praise her for.

Dogs are such amazing creatures and devoted partners. Our lives are dull and drab without their amazing energy.

I treasure each day and each adventure with my beloved companion.

The photo is of a Sky, a blonde Husky, with bright blue eyes, lying on the floor next to the me, facing the camera.

Sorry to have been away so long, I miss seeing all of your posts!

When I first started posting at bsky, I was unemployed. It was like a mini retirement, which I enjoyed immensely.

Now I am happily back to work, but as with all us working people, time has returned to being an even more precious commodity.

As I adjust to the time and energy level change, I hope to spend more time on bsky, looking through peoples galleries.

Back to the Ruby throated Hummingbird...

Hummingbirds are incredibly small birds, typically weighing only a few grams. They are known for their rapid wing beating, which creates a humming sound and allows them to hover in place. Most hummingbirds have long, slender beaks and small, saber-like wings, perfect for reaching into flowers to extract nectar. Many species also exhibit bright, iridescent colors, especially males.

#nature #photography #sunset Postcards from Florida - Florida Sunset - Description in alt text
Among the heart-breaking losses of 2024 for me, I lost a dear friend.

Carl was the quintessential world traveler. You name it, he probably went there. Someday I will post the photo of him on a camel in front of the pyramids of Egypt.

He was "That guy", who was up for anything. So in 2016 when I found myself between jobs, Carl said "Come out to Florida, I'm staying at my dads place, we will have a blast!"

I went, and we did have a blast!! At one point I told him about the Coral Castle legend... "Let's go!!" he said, of course he did.

But I also made Carl take me on nature tours, because....nature!

So, I was going through old photos and I thought, most of my photos are from Minnesota, I should share some of the shots from Florida.

This is a beautiful Sunset from Carl's dads patio. The water was calm, mirror like. The photo is of a small bay, the surrounding trees and houses are mostly silhouettes, the sky is a deep blue, turning to subtle pinks and orange near the horizon. This is reflected almost mirror perfect, in the water, which tapers off from dark blue to nearly black at the bottom of the frame.
