There is another bow shock visible at the top of the photo (at about 1 o'clock). The interaction between our Sun's solar wind and the LIC (Local Interstellar Cloud) is optically thin and is probably only a bow wave, not a shock.

My childhood cat was named Smudgy. She was a tuxedo cat, but had some brown/tan speckles around her mouth that looked like she had gotten into something (she hadn't - we checked).

No, the signal is too small. We did pass through the tail of Comet C/2025 R3, but we observed it in pick-up ions, not ENAs. That result will be published soon.

Early morning kayaking is one of the ways I get both exercise and relaxation. I bring a reasonable camera (Canon EOS 80D with a Canon EFS 18-200 zoom). Here are some photos from this morning (5/17/26) on the Rocky Gorge Reservoir in Maryland. Descriptions in the ALT text.

She was also a fantastic professor (I had her for E&M). She really cared about her students and, although she gave tough exams, the students responded by learning more. I was in her class as a freshman, but she was a mentor for 4 years. Her recommendation helped get me into Caltech. My favorite!

Friends are my break from the horrors. My friends are spread across the country (and world) enough that there is frequently someone on Discord or Boardgamearena, although in person is always best. The best thing about "online" is that is easier to interact with remote friends (read "nerds").

Found the distant velocity (58 km/s), much larger than the proper motion (maybe 13.2 km/s, but there is considerable variation in different calculations). Still needs to be subtracted to get an accurate direction for the "source" of 3I/ATLAS.
000
Eric the Heliophysicist @eric-helio.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
Is there a plot of the 3I/ATLAS origin on the celestial sphere? Also, I see that the perihelion speed is ~68 km/s. What was it's original speed? I'm just curious about what's in that direction (after removing the Sun's proper motion).
200
Eric the Heliophysicist @eric-helio.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
I know about hyperbolic orbits, but it always struck me as odd. Would you say that 3I/ATLAS is orbiting the Sun? It is the continuation of the set of eccentricities, but by that definition, all nearby stars are, to some precision, in hyperbolic orbits around the Sun (as is everything).
100
Eric the Heliophysicist @eric-helio.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
Can you really call it an orbit? Isn't more accurately a trajectory?
