People always tell me, “Don’t put the cart
before the horse,” which is curious
because I don’t have a horse.
Is this some new advancement in public shaming—
repeatedly drawing one’s attention
to that which one is currently not, and never
has been, in possession of?
If ever, I happen to obtain a Clydesdale,
then I’ll align, absolutely, it to its proper position
in relation to the cart, but I can’t
do that because all I have is the cart.
One solitary cart—a little grief wagon that goes
precisely nowhere—along with, apparently, one
invisible horse, which does not pull,
does not haul, does not in any fashion
budge, impel or tow my disaster buggy
up the hill or down the road.
I’m not asking for much. A more tender world
with less hatred strutting the streets.
Perhaps a downtick in state-sanctioned violence
against civilians. Wind through the trees.
Water under the bridge. Kindness.
LOL, says the world. These things take time, says
the Office of Disappointment. Change cannot
be rushed, says the roundtable of my smartest friends.
Then, together, they say, The cart!
They say, The horse!
They say, Haven’t we told you already?
So my invisible horse remains
standing where it previously stood:
between hotdog stands and hallelujahs,
between the Nasdaq and the moon’s adumbral visage,
between the status quo and The Great Filter,
and I can see that it’s not his fault—being
invisible and not existing—
how he’s the product of both my imagination
and society’s failure of imagination.
Watch how I press my hand against his translucent flank.
How I hold two sugar cubes to his hypothetical mouth.
How I say I want to believe in him,
speaking softly into his missing ear. White copperplate calligraphy on red paper:

Hail, Pterry, full of rage, the muse is with thee. Blessed art thou among authors, and blessed is the fruit of thy brain, Discworld.

Hail Pterry, Father of Great A'Tuin, who channeled rage into compassion blessed are thy words.

Behold, she is done! This is, without a doubt, the most complex project I've ever undertaken, and I'm very proud of myself for seeing it through to the end. #humanArt #noAI #artistsofMastodon #IslamicGeometricart
Panel composed of large tesselating stars, hexagons, and bow-tie shapes, each filled with symmetrically twining white biomorphic designs on a dark blue background. The outlines of the shapes are also in dark blue channels, and the border around the panel is dark blue with a little picket-fence type design running along it in white.

Pictures, for posterity. Original item on the left -- a bit stiff, doesn't work terribly well, but it's clear how it's *supposed* to work. Ebay item on the right. It's so ridiculously, risibly bad I can't even get mad at it. I'm grateful for the laugh.
Side-by-side comparison of two snail-shapped dotted-line ruling pens. On the left is an actual device, which is clearly engineered to work. On the right is the fake device, with a HILARIOUSLY not-a-ruling-pen tip connected to some various bars via bolts. There is absolutely no way this thing will draw any lines at all, let alone dotted ones. The pen tip is not a pen, and the gear at the back does not engage with the pen arm.

Progress! You have to understand that these take ages to paint. I spent two hours last night doing just one of those hexagons. #humanart #islamicgeometricart
Partially painted panel of blue and white Uzbek biomorphic decoration (white vinework on blue background), laid out in a geometric grid of stars and hexagons and bowtie shapes. The central star, four partial stars in the corners, and two complete hexagons along the long midline have been fully painted. Four half-hexagons at the edges and all the bowties and partial bowties have their designs outline, but remain unpainted.

Screencap of a tumblr post from user februarytrash, from June 3rd (I presume 2026). It is an edit of the meme that reads 'A computer can never be held accountable. Therefore a computer must never make a management decision'. Except now it reads 'A computer can never be horny or sad. Therefore a computer must never make an artistic decision.'

Underneath the image, the poster wrote 'being sad and horny is a privilege'.

Quote from Stacie Michelle (I found this when she was on twitter under the handle @staciemichelle), reading 'Banana bread is actually the first step on one's journey to radicalization because it requires recognizing when something is rotting and needs to be turned into something else'. Behold, also, my testing of the various nibs. The longer texts are from 'Rats, Lice, & History', by Hans Zinsser, a fantastic, odd, quirky book from the 1930s by a doctor, ostensibly about typhus, but with surprisingly little actually relating to typhus in it […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

Text written with 'B&F 803' (which means Baignol & Farjon 803). It's a full page of copperplate in walnut ink. It reads

The important point is that infectious disease is merely a disagreeable instance of a widely prevalent tendency of all living creatures to save themselves the bother of building, by their own efforts, the things they require. Whenever they find it possible to take advantage of the constructive labors of others, this is the direction of the least resistance. The plant does the work with its roots and its green leaves. The cow eats the plant. Man eats both of them; and bacteria (or investment bankers) eat the man. Complete elucidation would require elaborate technical discussions, but the principle is clear. Life on earth is an endless chain of parasitism which would soon lead to the complete annihilation of all living beings unless the incurruptible workers of the vegetable kingdom constantly renewed the supply of suitable nitrogen and carbon compounds which other living things can filch. It is a topic that might lend itself to endless trite moralizing. In the last analysis, man may be defined as a parasite on a vegetable.
More from Hans Zinsser's 'Rats, Lice, and History'. This time the text reads:

If warriors and politicians and patriots and all the other people responsible for wars had only left the world alone for another hundred years this discovery might, without further scientific advances, have sounded theknell of epidemic typhus in the west.

But then a Grand Duke was murdered at Serajevo and everybody lost their heads, ourselves and T. Roosevelt included--except Mr Wilson, who lost his two years later; and the bandfs played the "Wacht am Rhein" and the "Marseilleise" and "God Save the King" and "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" and "Boje tsaria Khrani" and "Ustaj, ustaj, Srbine" and, several years later, the "Star-Spangled Banner." and the arbed-wire kings and the T.T.T., corned beef, and ordnance people, and the ship jobberes and the shoe manufacturers and the khaki pants trade, and so forth, and so forth, laid the foundation for a new and Hollywoodian aristocracy that lasted until 1929. And God was on evefyone's side. And when we had all gone to war and the stage was set, typhus woke up again.

Some questioned how handing out reprints of an editorial published in the ADA’s own journal, at the ADA’s own annual conference, could be construed as a violation of that code. The scientists were not disruptive or disorderly in their conduct, based on the videos

no animal was harmed during the making of this video. not one. for the few minutes that we were shooting film, the guns of each hunter fell silent. the industrial bolt throwers observed a moment's peace and the jaws of every predator hung softly open. no fish bit any hook and the bait worms held off on drowning only until the cameras stopped. the tails of ruminants ceased to flick just as their attendant flies, in unison, landed on their flanks to catch their tiny breaths. a spider instantly stopped winding silk around a wasp, patiently waiting for the caesura to end. a young veterinarian paused with the syringe in their hand. somewhere, a colicky baby stopped biting its mother's nipple and nursed happily for the very first time. we're sorry. we're sorry it couldn't have been longer. we didn't know this would happen.

A propos of sharing genuine, human art, here are some sketches and eventual painted copies I made of the beautiful stencils in the drawing room of Holmwood House. #artistsOfMastodon #traditionalArt #humanArt #noAI
Some beautiful wall stencil on a pinkish background, with shades of maroon and brown and cream with pops of blue. The dominant feature is an elaborate lower border with alternating designs featuring palmeate leaves.A deeply ugly, messy, disproportionate sketch of the wall stencils in the previous picture. Penciled note in the bottom corner reads 'sketched at Holmwood house, in drawing room, sun 24 May 2026'A second iteration of the sketch from the previous picture, this time with lengths noted to indicate the appropriate proportions. Below the sketch is a taped tracing of the design. Two side by side renditions of the sketch from the previous picture, this time painted to match, approximately, the colours from the original stencils (in pic 1). Little brush patches next to the edges of the background on the right-hand design show the artist attempting to colour-match, pehaps because they didn't mix up enough gouache to do more than one design. The left-hand design's background is a bit cooler in tone, so evidently the colour-matching FAILED, DIDN'T IT hmph.

A nice, tidy geometric construction, with five-fold symmetry, showing three rosettes (two bottom, one top) embedded in a rectangle, with some star-shaped motifs surrounding them, and a central pentagon, some hexagons, and bow-tie shapes in between. Very demure, very cutesy. Nothing wrong here. Simple!A half-drawn attempt at the same pattern as the previous picture, duplicated top and bottom. There are two rosettes in the middle, one on top, and a duplicate one on the bottom. The intervening shapes (hexagons, pentagons, etc) have not been drawn. A completed version of the abandoned attempt from before, drawn directly into a spiral-bound sketchbook. Attribution on the top of the page says Sönmez vol. 3, Desen 102. A handwritten note is on on the left margin (see next pic for transcription).NB: This is imperfect. Upper and lower decagons ended up different sizes, becaues centers were different distances fro midline. (Why? How did that happen?)

[alt-texters's note: this happened because the distances of the upper/lower decagons from the midline was determined by the intersection of the radial lines drawn for the two side-by-side circles that define the twin central rosettes. If those radial lines do not perfectly divide the circle, then they'll intersect at slightly separate locations. The solution, of course, is to find ONE intersection of the radial lines, say the top one, and then draw a proportioning circle, with the center where the twin central circles touch, and the radius defined by the intersection of the radial lines. Then make sure that the other pair of radial lines are drawn such that their intersection coincides with the intersection of the proportioning circle and the central vertical line. The geometry is simple. But do I really want to draw this a FOURTH time, now that I know how to fix it? Wouldn't it be easier to just keep track of top vs. bottom when I transfer it to a larger watercolour paper for coloring, and make sure I don't try to match up the mismatching upper/lower decagons when I tile the pattern?*

*This approach will almost certainly reveal wildly frustrating problems. I know. I know. i need to redraw it. goddammit.]

[ukpol, uspol] OMG, Scotland has its own Four Seasons Total Landscaping event!
Reform UK had originally planned to do a press call this morning at the Kelpies - the gigantic horse sculptures outside Falkirk.

However this turned out to be news to the people running the site on behalf of the local authority, which has to remain strictly politically neutral.

So Malcolm Offord ended up speaking to the media at a nearby farm, owned by a Reform candidate.

The party had already planned a secondary event here - but in the end the pictures of the day have ended up featuring cows rather than steel statues of shape-shifting water spirits.

Mise-en-place in progress. cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1023660… I hasten to clarify that the contributions of the garlic clove interns in the bottom row are not included in the billable hours of this recipe.
An artificially tidy kitchen worktop with a cutting board, on which sit 27ish peeled cloves of garlic in three rows (the bottom row containing those irritatingly teeny nubbins of garlic that still need to be individually peeled), an unpeeled bulb of garlic, a little bowl of wine, a tin of tomatoes, a measuring cup, a jar of pepper flakes, a dutch oven lid, a box of salt, lid invitingly open, a pepper grinder, and two bottles of olive oil.

I cannot emphasize enough how *~*aesthetically*~* arranged everything is. The countertop is clear. The tiles of the backsplash are fucking gorgeous. There is not a fragment of garlic skin to be seen.

A photograph of a very large alligator which is substantially wider than it is tall. In fact, it quite resembles the loaf of bread I just baked. Both, you see, are exceptionally flat. However, the resemblance ends there, because while this property is a disappointment in my bread, it only adds charm and elegance to the alligator's presentation.

Words -- and pictures, too -- are not capable of capturing the ridiculous vividness of this rainbow that greeted us outside the back door of our holiday rental in the Scottish highlands.
A view of a small, sloping backyard, separated by a brown plank fence from a sheepfield, beyond which are some trees, and beyond that are distant mountains. The sky is cloudy, but the landscape is in sunlight, and over this absurdly idyllic view stretches a magnificent rainbow which, however vivid it may appear in this picture, is not half as bright as it was in real life.

I have completed an Art! This is an early 16th century Iznik design modeled from a tile in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, featured as Pattern Study 3 in Isra Almahal's superb book on Islamic Biomorphic patterns. Holbein gouache (CMY pallette ftw!) on Arches […] [Original post on wandering.shop]

Everything follows six-fold radial symmetry.Detail of a swirling biomorphic pattern of stems and leaves and flowers in ultramarine, with details picked out in purple. The purple bits have a darker purple outline defining them. The same pattern from picture 1, beneath a book called 'Islamic Biomorphic Patterns: Creating Motifs Inspired by the Natural World', by Esra Almahal. The same pattern from picture 1, above a book opened to show the instruction pages from the book in picture 3 for creating that pattern. Today's XKCD is surprisingly heartfelt: xkcd.com/3101
panel 1:

Instructor: I'm supposed to give you the tools to do good science

Panel 2:

Instructor: But what *are* the tools? Methodology is hard and there are so many ways to get incorrect results. What is the magic ingredient that makes for good science?

Panel 3:

Instructor: To figure it out, I ran a regression with all the factors people say are important.

Slide text:
Outcome variable:
-Correct scientific results

Predictors:
-Collaboration
-Skepticism of others' claims
-Questioning your own beliefs
-Trying to falsify hypotheses
-Checking citations
-Statistical rigor
-Blinded analysis
-Financial disclosure
-Open data
[variables continue off panel]

Panel 4:
Instructor: The regression says two ingredients are the most crucial: 1) genuine curiosity about the answer to a question, and 2) ammonium hydroxide

Panel 4:
Student: Wait, why did *ammonia* score so high? How did it even get on the list?

Instructor: ... And now you're doing good science!

Hovertext: If you think curiosity without rigor is bad, you should see rigor wiithout curiosity.

I saw this on tumblr, and I'm pleased to report that I did this, roughly by age 30! (Well, more like 32). I put otters on all my lecture slides. Over the years I have accumulated a rather charming eclectic array of gifts from my students that tend toward otter-themed. #academicChatter
Screenshot from Dr Anna Hughes on twitter (@AnnaGHughes):

these "by age 30" memes are very funny but the truth is that by age 30 you should have an animal people associate with you so when they don't know what to get you for your birthday they can default to something with the animal.

An 'artist's impression' of Inverness castle's grounds. The castle floats in the background, not quite connected to the foreground gardens. People have been copy-pasted in, with varying degrees of motion-blur.

Behold! I have committed an art. This is an iznik hexagonal tile, based on the design instructions from from Ezra Almahal's excellent book on Islamic biomorphic patterns. #islamicArt #traditionalArt #ArtistsOfMastodon

Ground-breaking new research has revealed that, although birbs are all avians below a certain size threshold, borbs are not merely the round subsection of that category. In fact, the roundest borbs can actually be slightly larger than the birb-category […] [Original post on wandering.shop]
A coordinate grid with two axes: pointy to round (horizontal), and lorge to smol (vertical). Everything in the lower two quadrants (pointy + smol and round + smol) is coloured purple, and labeled 'birb'. Everything in the bottom right quadrant (round + smol), plus a bit in the lowest portion of the top right quadrant (lorge + round), is coloured blue and labeled 'borb'. THe remainder is labeled 'bird' in black.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough the Microsoft-Paintiness of this graphic.

Hexagonal geometric pattern with a central 12-pointed rosette and 1/3 rosettes at each of the points of the hexagon. The background colour is a swirling galaxy type of thing, with orangey red in the centre, shading to purple and indigo at the edges. The geometric pattern is drawn in shimmery silver.

My adorable pie-crust braid rim is sliding off the crust, and since it served a structural purpose, that means pie filling is also leaking in the oven. And I burned both hands putting it in. How's YOUR birthday going?

But the preponderance of commonalities and the sum of how they unfold is harder to discount. Wolff said that she’d been “completely blindsided” and “devastated” by Freeman’s accusations, and that she “hurt for everybody involved in this case.” “I didn’t do what I’m accused of,” she said. Freeman, who has sold her home in Alaska to pay her legal costs, told me that she was fighting in part because she no longer saw herself as unique. “If this can happen to me,” she said, “it could happen to somebody else.” ♦
