Reporting from London Centric has exposed the ongoing mass eviction of hundreds of tenants from properties across London owned by Asif Aziz. Our lives should never be at the mercy of one capricious billionaire: we need to tax billionaire wealth, build social homes, and change our system.
Graphic stating billionaires cause homelessness with a quote from London Centric reading "London's worst mass eviction in recent history", referring to Asif Aziz's eviction of hundreds of people. Billionaires should be taxed, the graphic concludes.

Billionaires are organising across the world, from South African billionaires trying to win control of political parties to American oligarchs undermining democracy wherever they can. The only way to stand up to them is for workers to organise back #heartunions

If we want to build a more equal society, unions must be a key part of that. We know that more unionised societies are more equal, workers are more protected, and communities stronger - but that's far from the only reason to #heartunions this week

Enough money to end global poverty 26 times over. That's how much money billionaires have made since 2020 according to Oxfam's new research. But instead of doing that, they're using this obscene cash pile to brazenly manipulate politics, buy governments, and rule us.
Oxfam research reveals £13.7 trillion wealth concentrated among 3,000 billionaires worldwide. This is bad.

Oxfam's new billionaire wealth tracker is the most entertainingly depressing tool I've seen in a while – the sheer scale of riches hoarded by billionaires is obscene, especially when you see how much public good tiny fractions of it could do. www.oxfam.org/en/oxfam-billionaire-…

Wealth in the UK is extremely concentrated at the top: over half belongs to the richest 10%, while the richest 1% control over a fifth by themselves. But the bottom half of the population – nearly 34 million people – have less than 1/20th between them. This is bad for all of us. It has to change.
UK wealth distribution shows 50% of people hold just 4.6%, while top 10% own 57%.

We should all be worried about the way that inequality is eating away at our communities, society, and democracy. It's led to bad governance, with policy only serving the interests of a narrow elite, and it's led to public trust in our system collapsing.

Combine that with a growing House of Lords and more and more powerful unelected figures shaping policy at the highest levels, and you get a country that's been getting more politically unequal since 2000.

The influence of money through big political donations is obvious, and donations of over £250k grew from £7.6m 20 years ago to over £47m today. But we also found that the share of national wealth held by the top 1% is strongly correlated with inequality of power.

The sources of the crises in our society – the super rich, oil and gas companies, banks and energy companies – will be delighted that today's budget chooses to protect them and tax us instead.
UK budget 2025 could raise £60bn from taxing the super rich; Labour raises £430m, leaving £59.6bn untapped.

Equality Trust @equalitytrust.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
Every budget is a collection of political choices. This one chose to double down on a broken system. Protecting billionaires at the expense of the rest of us will entrench inequality and further undermine peoples' faith in the system.
The sources of the UK’s crises – the super rich, oil and gas companies, banks and energy companies – will be pleased with today’s budget. The Chancellor chose to protect them from the public’s demands and continue on a path where inequality of wealth becomes inequality of power. The government could have taken real steps towards building the more equal society the public demand. Options were on the table to tax wealth and income from wealth, tax polluters, and invest in people.

Ending the two-child benefit cap in today's budget is huge, wonderful news for the 500,000 children lifted out of poverty and the 1 million who will face less deep poverty. But the other 4.1m children in poverty deserve the same. This was the right start: now do the rest.

Doing all this popular and fair stuff to tax the rich would be great on its own terms, but it could also help allow real investment in our future – and that pays dividends. Plus you get a better society out of it. Everyone wins, including the richest!
Taxing the rich to help build social homes could save £4.5bn in housing benefit and £3.3bn in universal credit; for everyone £100 spent on community spare there is a 31% return on investment, and the two-child benefit cap causes child poverty that costs the state £3.2bn every year. Investing in people pays!

Did the richest work harder to win their explosion of wealth? No! The cost of living crisis allowed banks, energy companies, water companies, supermarkets and more to do absolutely nothing and watch their profits soar off our higher bills. Taxing the richest would be about taking our wealth back.

Our tax system hugely favours the wealthiest. Taxes on income from work are much higher than passive income from wealth, allowing millionaires to pay effective tax rates that are half what the rest of us pay. Taxing the richest would make that system much fairer.

For Trustee Week, we asked our hard-working trustees to tell us how they felt about the UK's situation and the Equality Trust's mission to build a more equal society. Read more: equalitytrust.org.uk/news/blog/wh...
A quote from trustee Dianne Danquah that reads: To be a trustee, you have to believe in the mission of the organisation and want to see it thrive. I became an Equality Trust trustee to support the work of making society more equal for everyone.

In this current system, it is hard to find time to be involved in what you believe in outside of the job you need to survive but fighting against inequality is core to my beliefs and deserves the time and attention.Quote from Rosanne Fienga reading: The UK’s inequality crisis continues to deepen. Our research paints a stark picture, showing that just 50 families have more wealth than 50% of the UK population. And as the number of billionaires continues to grow, so does in-work poverty, foodbank use and rates of child poverty.

This dystopian concentration of wealth isn’t just morally indefensible, it is reflected in the lived experience of millions of people just surviving, in one of the richest countries on the planet. The movement we are building to tackle inequalities of income, wealth and power has never been more critical.
Quote from Hannah Fairbrother reading: I’m regularly inspired by and motivated by the work of the Equality Trust. I often share the newsletter with students and colleagues, mobilise resources in my teaching, and employ the evidence to inform and shape my research.

The Equality Trust’s vision for everyone to have the opportunity to have a good life, for communities to thrive, and for wealth and power to be shared more equally directly aligns with my commitment to understanding and tackling the political, social and economic structures that underlie health inequalities
