It may be true that they gave Muse those permissions *and also* that those should not have been permissions that were available or that would have occurred to an average user that they should have to set constraints on. That is really no excuse for incoherent security guardrails.

Sure, I was just speculating since I am not personally acquainted with Pelosi and don't know her state of mind. But it seems weird that she didn't endorse the person who is both more aligned with her historical positions on several issues and more likely to drive impact.

Also, I hope @scottwiener.bsky.social introduces term and age limits for congress as soon as SF votes him in, and that my rep @replsimon.bsky.social backs him in this. Cognitive ability and cultural awareness are real requirements for the job!

But the idea that you can be a NIMBY and a progressive is laughable and Connie Chan should never hold office again.

I honestly think @pelosi.house.gov is just so offended that @scottwiener.bsky.social declared for the primary before she stopped dithering about whether or not she was retiring that she picked his opponent to endorse knowing it was a safe D seat regardless.

Endorsement: Who should replace Nancy Pelosi in Congress? It’s not even a choice
OPINION: The most intriguing thing about the race between Scott Wiener and Connie Chan to fill Nancy Pelosi’s House seat is that it has become a race at all, the editorial board writes.

Way before the 1619 project, she was in fact famous as a journalist for her coverage of the American education system and other institutions in which systemic racism is perpetuated, including the NYT magazine cover story mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs. . . if you read the article

It is so weird to me (sitting in Oakland) that somehow she is considered the progressive in this race. The floor for the progressive label should be making life more affordable, and that starts with housing. Without housing, there are no working class people or artists left in SF to champion!

Supposedly the most amazing music venue ever in Chicago that closed about 8 months before I turned 21 was Lounge Ax, owned by Jeff Tweedy's wife Sue Miller

I was honestly not that put off to pay for the citation I received- I try to drive carefully when I have to drive, but I am no more immune to road engineering than the next person. It's make me a bit more attentive and willing to drive slower even with no cars in front of me.

And charge them the total cost of a year's education in OUSD for every student they poach from us to boost their diversity numbers, inevitably high achievers who could help lift up our own schools.

I don't think we need to absorb Piedmont into Oakland, I just want to tax them for using our roads/infrastructure/etc.

Slightly OT - do you know of any off the shelf frames for Fillmore posters (with or without matting)? They are a decidedly non-standard size.

We need to do this in Oakland for stalled housing sites and unused/off-market commercial sites as well - there are so many sites in West Oakland that aren't being used but are so cheap to sit on that the owners have no incentive to invest in them.

That would be an unexpectedly low return; $250/month for 17 years is 51k just in contributions. My son's age-targeted 529 has at least 20% YoY returns right now, which would give at least $300k at that contribution rate (the risk profile adjusts over time as mentioned up thread).

SEPTA's bus + rail service in Philadelphia while I was there for the World Cup the past 2 weeks was a revelation, even without dedicated BRT lanes: just having regular service at ~10 minute intervals on most lines made transfers dead simple, it was super easy to use transit instead of rideshare

I was at the match, and the vast majority of flopping (and uncalled fouls) came from Paraguay. Some absolute terrible play and worse officiating.

Agree on the idea of a no-show policy, but worried that the 2 day window also incentivizes people to show up when they might be ill and be better off at home. I have had a lot of last-minute cancellations bc my kid woke up with a fever or upset stomach.

Or if you want to go straight to e-bike, the tern HSD and GSD are both great (I prefer the HSD as I only have one 5 year old to transport and it is a little easier to park/corner)

Rivendell Appaloosa or Charlie Gallop might work (call or email them to confirm which racks and seats they would recommend). I use a litelok X1 plus a chain for my bikes - both a bit annoyingly heavy to carry around, but worth it for the peace of mind. www.rivbike.com/products/fra...

The Joe Appaloosa is as good an all-around bike as we make. It’s 100 percent perfect for 90 percent of the riding you’re likely to do, and 90 percent perfect for the other ten percent. Ideal for tires...

That's pretty bad, but I still think the worst is the bike rack at Stanford Medical in Emeryville: on a platform with a curb but no curb cut and abutting a hedge!

IIRC, when you dig into the data from the story the average increase in difference drivers gave was something like 3" for cyclists without helmets - potentially significant in the statistical sense, but not physically.

Now with agentic coding, we can finally staff the projects that were never able to be competitive in hiring SWEs - but we need to organize to help builders find the market for their ideas and create a framework for responsible innovation.

My first jobs in tech were motivated by a mission to level the playing field. In the early 2010s, so much of the optimism of the tech industry was directed at trying to tackle genuinely hard problems!

This includes moonshots like curing cancers and also the very pragmatic and profoundly impactful smaller efforts that could be made in improving civic applications of technology, like building digital twins of urban infrastructure for improved planning, or unified applications for social assistance.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately: how might we build incubators for the kinds of work that used to be done (to take my own employer as an example) by Google.org or the X division at Alphabet (both still exist but are much depleted vs their previous selves)?

Meanwhile, the money chases the most generic and likely to be commoditized elements of AI platforms (chips and foundational models are barriers to entry now but not defensible moats), and we see hundreds of millions spent on the suppression of dissent and responsible regulation.

This OpEd by @jofarrell.bsky.social speaks to a lot of the concerns and disappointment many of us in the tech industry have as we see the most powerful companies chase the most frivolous applications for AI.
