Together, these elements form a real time, performative system in which the garden’s specimens gradually evolve, allowing us to explore this uncertain and expanding zone of oceanic terrestrial interaction as it grows, mutates, and decays.

Arranged in a radial structure, the specimens are gradually struck by virtual charged particles and mutate over time. Some develop curious forms, while others become over irradiated and die. Dead specimens are replanted in the hope that they may fare better in the future.

Each specimen therefore contains both “DNA” and a “ribosome,” here a neural network, within its .specimen container. All the imagery in (di)atomic garden, from specimens to mutations, is generated entirely from that DNA. As the specimens are irradiated, they mutate.

Entangled Others @entangledothers.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Before they could be “planted,” these specimens had to be processed into something like artificial lifeforms, so that they could be affected by irradiation. Their pixels are encoded into strings of pseudo genetic code, namely GATC bases.

This garden brings together specimens from the Pomological Survey of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with a dataset of Antarctic phytoplankton, allowing us to explore the slow but steady merging of the two through human activity

To explore this, we sourced uranium ore in order to create an atomic garden of our own. By continuously sampling the charged emissions emanating from the ore, we translated them into data that could drive a virtual, simulated garden.

Due to that, It is not much of a stretch to think of parts of the ocean as an abyssal gamma garden, one whose consequences remain unresolved. (di)atomic garden acts as a bridge between the terrestrial and the oceanic, where those boundaries are already uneasily dissolving.

Entangled Others @entangledothers.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Unsurprisingly, and sadly, the ocean has a long history of dumping and contamination, including radioactive contamination. Not even Antarctica has been spared.

Entangled Others @entangledothers.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
Fascinating as this history is, our research led us beyond this garden scale Petri dish of radiation and DNA. There have been many occasions on which the natural world has been exposed to irradiation, perhaps nowhere more extensively than in the ocean.

Crude compared with the precision of CRISPR, the method still produced more than 2,000 mutant plant varieties, many of which remain in use today, including Rio Red grapefruit for its deep red flesh, Golden Promise barley, and many others.

Postwar atomic gardens were attempts to produce useful new traits by exposing plants to radiation, as part of the Atoms for Peace programme. Plants were arranged radially around a central mechanism that raised and lowered a cobalt 60 source to irradiate them.

Belatedly, a long 🧵 on our latest work, (di)atomic garden, an exploration of radiation’s mutative power, some of its history, and its afterlives in the present. The work began with our encounter with the “atomic garden,” or “gamma garden”:

Neural networks normally cannot reproduce patterns outside of the data used to train them, but through the use of quantum circuits and marine data, the shifting regions of entanglement create regions of influence, allowing patterns of Others to exist within them.

The work is the entanglement of neural networks and oceanic data as an experimental exploration of ways to make tangible, through the use of quantum computation and neural networks, the innate interconnected nature of ecosystems and specimens, artificial & natural.

About the works: ‘Far below the foam and crest of all the waves we can see, slow depths unhurriedly assimilate all. Absorbing the seasons ebb, the winter storms flow, and the hasty tides with glacial calm, they in turn exhale that which was as a soft upwelling.
