Don't you wish you could tell record keepers to do it right? It drives me crazy when people were either too lazy, disinterested, naive, or misinformed to realize the value of recording accurate data. In Navarro County, "Native" is US or blank rather than states or countries EnslavedTexas.org

Thursday is North Texas Giving Day, but EnslavedTexas.org did not form until after the deadline to qualify for matching funds. If you can help us with our mission to publically document the history of slavery in Texas, please go to the support tab (far right on page). We appreciate it very much.

When George Thompson Ruby registered to vote in Galveston, June 7, 1867, did he suspect he would be elected to the Texas Senate 2 years later? Born free, he arrived in Texas in 1866 with many advantages over those born in the South. enslavedtexas.org #TexasHistory #Blackhistory #EnslavedTexas

Today's research time is for finding people stolen from Africa long after the Trans-Atlantic slave trade ended. www.enslavedtexas.org #Blackhistory #slavery #Texas

When your research makes you cry you know you are doing the right thing. Born in Africa in 1800 and brought to Texas as an enslaved man in 1850. When or how Sam Brown (in this census, Sambo) arrived in the US is yet unknown. #Slavery #Blackhistory #Texas #Africa enslavedtexas.org

We've been told it's "it's not a good time" to share our research. We trace forced migration of enslaved men into Texas from 1807 until 1865 & freedmen and some still enslaved until through 1869. It's always the right time to share history. #Blackhistory #Texas #Slavery #Migration EnslavedTexas.org

When Sam Winn registered to vote in Walker County in 1867, he told the registrar he had been brought to Texas 50 years ago. That translates to at least fifty-years of enslavement, only to be able, finally, to register to vote for change. Be like Sam. #vote

Post-emancipation didn't mean leaving the plantation. When Freedmen registered to vote, they often reported their former enslaver's plantation as their place of residence.

Cato Jackson registered to vote 11-29-1869. From VA, he arrived in TX in 1812. Basic details about his life are missing. In 1866, as a Freeman, he moved to Fort Bend County, where in 1870, Jackson, 59, sharecropper, lived with Lydia Jackson, 69, from Maryland, who kept house. enslavedtexas.org

Have recorded 59% of the registered Freedmen in Texas as of this morning. Six years into this project and still as determined as ever to give them back their names. enslavedtexas.org Click the timeline on map to watch their forced migration. Each line is a person.
