MEDIA CAPTURE In 1987 the US ended the Fairness Doctrine - a rule saying Broadcasters had to air contrasting views, but not with equal prominence Later deregulation let political actors buy up TV, Radio & eventually Social Media They seem to believe that public opinion should be shaped not served

In the 80's Reagan and Thatcher may have intended to improve public choice by the first amendment openness or by NPM New Public Management i.e. Business techniques to improve effectiveness - the outcome was the opposite, power shifted to the policy commissioners and media owners.

In 1987 "We the People" stopped being the customer. Governments redefined the real customer as the policy-makers. They use our taxes to pay contractors to hit targets - not care for people. It's Margaret Thatcher's legacy - copied by markets, business & investors worldwide - We the Voters

Women v Fascism Actress Dame Harriet Walter, star of Silo, recently learnt a secret - that her mother, Xandra de Trafford, had never revealed. Xandra had been a British military intelligence officer who helped plan the D‑Day landings. Her secret heroism inspires: plan, register, show up, vote.

Irish WW2 Éire shared intel with the Allies, caught Nazi spies, & sent data crucial for D‑Day. It allowed a secret air corridor & gave navigation aids to Allied shipping. Returned planes & pilots & broke the Görtz cipher before Bletchley. Over 100k Irish — & 1.7m Irish Americans — fought fascism.

Hazel Hill was 13. In 1934 she proved the Spitfire needed eight guns to stop a bomber — not four or six. The RAF listened — because she was right. A young girl’s calculations helped defend Britain against invasion six years before the Battle of Britain. Four guns on each wing marked in red below

Young girl did the mathematics with her RAF father at her kitchen table and proved that a Spitfire or Hurricane fighter plane needed 8 guns at a minimum to down an enemy aircraft - not 4 or 6. In the image, red squares mark the position of the 8 guns - 4 on each wing. Hazel Hill's abstract insight became physical reality in a Spitfire and help defend against fascism.

The Star‑Spangled Banner It flew at Fort McHenry — named for an Irish surgeon who served under Washington and signed the Constitution. The flag that survived the British onslaught is still there. But will its promise yet live — will the United States be free, will it remain the home of the brave.

Audrey Hepburn Under Nazi occupation, Audrey carried messages for the Dutch Underground — she was 14. She danced in secret recitals to raise money for the Resistance. Liberated, she was cared for by the relief agency that became UNICEF — as a movie star she served as its Goodwill Ambassador.

Mary Elmes Smuggled 200 Jewish children from the Nazis, often in the boot of her car — until arrested by the Gestapo. The only Irish person recognised as Righteous Among the Nations. Aided refugees in the Spanish Civil War and, with US Quakers, fed 84,000 children in occupied France. Resistance.

The D Day landings - 'Higgins Boats' Irish American Andrew Higgins designed & build the shallow boats that got the Allies onto the beaches at Normandy to liberate Europe from fascists. 160k men landed in the first 24 hrs. "Higgins... won the war for us" - Eisenhower. Anti-fascists win.

American G.I.'s on their way to land on the Normandy beaches on D Day June 1944 over rough seas. The Higgins boats avoided the mines, deposited the troops and reversed back to the troop ships, ready to go again.

Spitfire Wg/Cmdr Brendan Finucane Finucane's father had fought against the British alongside Eamon DeValera, in 1916. In 1940 his son Brendan flew in the Battle of Britain and defended Britain against invasion. He was shot down 1942 - fighting to free Europe. Both fought for freedom.

Godot is not coming... Samuel Beckett was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his resistance to the Nazis. Although the U.S. and its Allies liberated France in 1945, now the U.S. is distanced from its Allies and under siege from within. The resistance is excellent - vote them all out.
