We caught up with Gil in Cohort 1, regarding a poster he presented at the European Meeting on Complement in Human Diseases in Cardiff. Gil attended with The Sharp lab alongside many other European researchers working on complement, part of the innate immune system.

Earlier in the year, Cohort 1's Yige Chen attended the 9th IEEE International Conference on #SoftRobotics RoboSoft 2026 in Kanazawa, Japan. Yige presented her research group's paper and poster on 3D-Printed Highly Entangled Hydrogels for Strong, Fast, and Fatigue-resistant Soft Hydraulic Actuators.

🚨NEW OPPORTUNITY We are looking to recruit a Research Associate/Senior Research Associate in Intracellular Transport and Protein Design at University of Bristol. The project will involve engineering proteins to control intracellular transport, combining protein design, biophysics and cell biology.

We’re getting ready to welcome the next cohort of students to the EngBio CDT! 🎉 In just over a month, we’ll be welcoming our third cohort onto the course. We’ll kick things off with a week in Bristol, followed by an induction week in Oxford, before the foundation courses in Maths and Biology begin.

Recently we caught up with Cohort 2’s Alfie Wingfield who is wrapping up his second rotation in Oxford, using a multi-stress reporter strain of E. coli to investigate how microbial cell factories respond to chemical stresses found in industrial bioreactors (1/2)

Our Cohort 1 student Robin Henry's US conference trip didn't stop at SEED! Robin also presented his research at the International Workshop on Bio-Design Automation (IWBDA), where he shared a talk on Myriad, his GPU-accelerated platform for closed-loop single-cell experiments.

In June Cohort 1 student, Robin Henry, attended the Synthetic Biology: Engineering, Evolution, & Design (SEED) conference at the Colorado Convention Centre in Denver. SEED is the world's largest academic synthetic biology conference. This year's programme covered everything from cell-free systems

This week, we welcomed Saif Ur-Rehman to Bristol. Saif talked about the data foundations behind biological foundation models and about the lab-in-the-loop platform they are building at Outpost Bio to predict how the gut microbiome shapes drug response.

A few weeks ago, cohort 2 student Aoife attended London Protein Design Day at Imperial College London. The conference showcased new research, platforming master’s students to principal investigators working in immunoinformatics, generative model development, and enzyme and biosensor engineering.

This week, we caught up with Maria Tasca from Cohort 1 in Bristol, to learn about the Data Hazards workshop she ran at the AIBIO conference in Aberdeen. ⚠️ Maria introduced the concept of hazard labels for data science; what they are, how they are used, and their importance in data science projects.

Congratulations to Robin Henry on being a co-author of a paper published in Nature earlier this year! As part of his 2nd project supervised by Harrison Steel, Robin contributed to sample preparation, microscopy experiments, & data analysis, earning fourth authorship on this exciting publication.

We caught up with Jack Dalton, a Cohort 1 student at @ox.ac.uk about his work in the Steel Lab: using automated evolution machines + AI co-scientists to steer bacterial evolution faster and more predictably for biomanufacturing, food, drugs, and even future space applications.
