Whoa -- just noticed NERC acknowledging a data error in its MISO numbers leading to a lot less reliability problems. Bad data leading to a wrong (and highly impactful) conclusion is my nightmare! Good on NERC for acknowledging and correcting the record! #EnergySky www.nerc.com/news/Pages/S...

Connecting infrastructure to the grid has been a passion since I worked on FERC's original Order 2003. Surplus interconnection is fast and provides states a tool to accelerate policy achievement even in the face of long queues. Great to work with ‪@mfarmer.bsky.social & the GridLab team!

I wonder when/if we'll hear from business leaders on this. Imagine a new billion $ pipeline. It'll be half done in 2029. Does this mean that the next president simply reverses everything? How do you invest in American infrastructure? This is a tough genie to put back in the bottle.

Energy regulation is boring by design. Investment requires certainty and predictability & the boring part is a fundamental design feature, not a bug. There's some spicy stuff at the edges. But 90% of everything is BORING. More uncertainty = bad for business = bad for consumers, Red & Blue.

WSJ quoted DeepSeek as saying their average training run costs $5.6 million, compared to public reports of $100 million-plus from the big U.S. players. Increasing energy efficiency of AI has long be viewed as a major load growth uncertainty. It bigly affects load growth forecasts.

Who thinks the rise of DeepSeek will appreciably reduce data center demand growth? Leaving aside whether DeepSeek itself is a game-changer, is there a next generation of AI development that tries to work smarter, not harder, with the attendent decrease in electricity consumption? #energysky

Agreed! In the spirit of a new year, my hope is that transmission will go bipartisan. The economic development story has bipartisan appeal & many of the extreme load growth states are Red States. This changes tx from a Blue State issue to a national issue requiring national solutions. We'll see!

I'll bite. To me, yes, thermal's a euphemism for fossil. But it’s okay! It's accurate(!), but avoids the slightly pejorative tinge of the "fossil" term. For those of us trying to drive consensus across Red State/Blue State audiences, those tonal nuances matter. Why alienate potential allies? 🔌💡

Federal-state consensus is needed around 1) whether to ring-fence non-data-center retail customers from bearing the costs of expanding the transmission grid to meet data center load. 2) whether cost allocation rules specific to data centers constitute undue discrimination. #energysky

This is the biggest question in the energy industry today. Three concepts are in tension: 1) utilities shouldn't be in the business of judging how you use electricity; 2) the concept of universal service; and 3) consumer cost. Look for an upcoming OpEd from Sue Glatz and myself on this!

PJM's proposal is to let new gen jump in and save the day. The proposal is, in theory, tech neutral. But the clear read is that the Board is thinking new nat gas. I'd suggest energy storage is ready for a starring role in saving PJM - we can get new programs launched fast enough. #energysky

The role of data centers in accelerating the crisis is an important read-through, since "PJM’s load forecast will be increasing from these levels to reflect growing data center demand. This will exacerbate the need for new resources." #energysky

According to PJM, we would need between 62 - 100% of all projects in the interconnection queue to reach commercial operation in order to avoid a reliability shortfall by 2030 -- which is highly unrealistic. So what's to be done? #energysky

PJM's Board letter is a must-read for those interested in clean energy policy. The specific roadmap is important, but more relevant is the PJM's assertion that there is simply not enough clean energy to maintain reliability without new (likely gas) generation. 🔌💡 www.pjm.com/-/media/DotC...

And totally agree that nobody benefits from regulatory uncertainty. Consto makes a good case starting on page 22 for the various steps that FERC could take. If you're in favor of getting data centers up and running quick, this is as good a roadmap as there is. #energysky

AD24-11 Recap: Talen argues colocaters should pay for transmiss. service to the extent it actively uses the grid (eg, on net load). Not surprising; but I suspect the economics would support paying transmission charges on gross load. Speed + regulatory certainty > minimizing costs, no? 🔌💡
