I think too many of my countrymen have a sense of apathy or outright hatred, but this will amount to nothing. If you can’t bring yourself to “love this cultured hell” — love its people, land, and culture enough to have hope — then your pessimism will prevent you from taking any positive action.

This is one of my favorite poems about the US. Coming from a queer Harlem Renaissance writer, it really captures the complicated feelings I have about this country.

The poem “America” by Claude McKay:

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth.
Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,
Giving me strength erect against her hate,

It’s just speculation, but if “Prophecy” was originally planned to be Chapter 5, it would be more cohesive narratively and would be a satisfying conclusion for the original plan of releasing ch2-5 at once. Further evidence: this would’ve made the church service actually take place on a Sunday

Don’t get me wrong, the game is still good, but I am beginning to worry that it might not actually surpass Undertale in quality. Undertale may seem archaic in comparison, but it has a cohesion that Deltarune currently lacks.

But in general, there is a tension between what is essentially a modern studio game sitting on the foundation of a solo project from 10 years ago. This causes inconsistencies in mechanics, art style, gameplay, and story. It’s hard to hold this against the game or Toby, but still.

Think of Huckleberry Finn. Its problematic yet sincere depiction of race has provoked more discussion on how we can better treat marginalized people than any whitewashed, utopian depiction of race has. Its problems have made it better art; it has had a more positive impact on the world because them.
