I know that "I have questions" is often a literary device, but if you do, your local End of Life Doula or other serious illness guide can answer questions about home funerals. Also, www.homefuneralalliance.org, sadly not on Bluesky.

Pending legal challenges, one third of American's will have access to Medical Aid in Dying by September. Legal challenges are not uncommon. Oregon's citizens voted twice for our Death With Dignity law, since the legislature didn't believe us the first time.

Despite widespread support in polls for legalizing aid in dying, the number of people who go through with the practice remains very small.

Yes, it can certainly feel daunting, especially since it's a daunting time to begin with. If you're eligible and want support, look for a state-wide organization that can walk you through the requirements. In Oregon, that's End of Life Choices Oregon: eolcoregon.org Or hire an EOL Guide or Doula.

Thank you for passing my website to the death/EOL doula you met. An MSW will definitely broaden and deepen her ability to serve people. Good for her! And thank you for your conversation here. I guard my clients' privacy, so your family's experience is a gift to my followers. Warmly, ~ Marcella

I absolutely support these convos at social events! If we continue to avoid them, we're all worse off. Only by normalizing curiosity and offering accurate info will people be able to have discussions with loved ones to find out *in advance* what they want. And to consider their own options.

That difficulty is not only in discussing potentially painful subjects under pressure, but also in holding family unity based on what the central person wants. Seeking unity as a family - of origin or chosen - under the pressure of grief and fear of error can bring out difficult family dynamics.

What a team your mom had on her side! And what love you all gave her by each pitching in your strengths and experience! Thank you for emphasizing the benefits to discussing and making plans for various scenarios in advance. As you say, it is so much more difficult to do once an illness progresses.

It sounds like you and your mom did all you could. Most medical professionals can't imagine every scenario. Not all attorneys can either. And treatment options change over time. Have you seen the 2021 AD form that includes space for one's values? That can guide decision makers beyond the old forms.

Thank you for offering your advice here. People who've been through it have unique wisdom. Please accept my condolences on the death of your mom. Nurses tend to be very realistic, so I suspect she'd be proud of you for advocating for her and grateful for you being there for her.

Ahhh, I’m sorry to hear there was some kind of unanticipated complication for your mom. With her background in nursing, I’m guessing there was added frustration as you tried to sort it all out. I’m wondering what you might do differently, having lived through that. If you care to say here, that is.

That's an intriguing approach. Probably best to label it with the name of someone very trustable so they can take charge of it and follow your wishes about it. And make sure they know about their special responsibility. I'm sure mystery novels have been written based on this idea!

But at least you're thinking about it! Really, few of us are ever fully prepared, I think. We can think things through, tell the people we love what we want and don't want, fill out paperwork, and pay for stuff in advance. That's the easy part. It takes a lot more to wrap our head around dying.

Chise, I always appreciate your clear, thorough descriptions. I wonder if you could add "next steps" when you post threads like this. For instance, maybe recap the levels of research already done (non-human mammals; n=50 humans; n=1000 humans) then add all the steps before the med can be prescribed.

I'm very pleased to see that some ICU patients in this UK hospital can now spend time outdoors. Well done! Hospital designers have known for decades that views of nature support healing. I can well imagine that *being* outside will help, too. Especially for those of us who connect with Nature.

So many people and families I serve in this rural area have strong connections to the outdoors, whether through work, recreation, or spirituality. Yet, if we end up at our regional medical center, we're in rooms with windows that don't open. Our view might be a city stretching out to the distance.⬇️

A note of caution: Some EMTs can save your life but may not be clear about the difference between a POLST and an Advance Directive. If you have a completed and signed POLST (bright pink around the edges), please keep it visible on your refrigerator, especially if you don't want to be resuscitated.

#Rural is when you chat with your local EMTs at the post office. I've worked beside EMTs in Emergency Rooms / Departments, been a patient being rushed to the ED in the middle of the night, and stood in the PO sharing (anonymized) EMS stories. Much gratitude to those who serve communities this way!

When doctors give you a different diagnosis than they gave you before, that can seem scary. But guess what? Medicine is a science. Gathering additional evidence allows for an updated diagnosis. I've seen this panic in hospitals, and I help my clients stay calm as they absorb their new future.
Graphic with text over photo of white paint peeling off a white wall. “Science is not truth.
Science is finding the truth.
When science changes its opinion, it didn't lie to you. It learned more.
