memverse_beta-test_(NOT)final 🐙 Marina (& Pearl, Acht, and Eight) 🐙 <5k 🐙 Splatoon Side Order 🐙 Rated G Written for the FANTASTIC @encorepwease.bsky.social zine! Leftovers are open now! See also @lycaneum.bsky.social 's amazing spot art! archiveofourown.org/works/89360051 #splatoon #voidsfic

Summary:

The Memverse is Marina's darling, her passion project, and it's wholly selfish of her to pour so much of herself into something meant to help others instead. Now that it's all coming undone, posing a threat to everyone it had been meant to help, what's she supposed to do?
--
"A sense of dread wells up in Marina every time she watches Eight stained dark and struggling, face screwed up in frustration. The twisting feeling in her gut that maybe the whole Memverse had been a mistake to begin with. Could this really help anyone? Even after they expel Order from the program, Marina can’t help but fear the roots were always rotten. A project too ambitious, more harm than good as result."

a short comic featuring Pearl, Marina, and Eight for @encorepwease.bsky.social zine. thanks for your support! #splatoon #offthehook

some kinda ninty sploon page 1
An unseen announcer says “Floor Start!
Go Pearl!”
Pearl in cyber gear in a virtual training arena shoots a bunch of fish robots.
A giant orb is knocked over the edge of the arena.
The task was to “Guide the 8-ball to the goal.”
“Wha?” says Pearl.
Words flash over the screen “Game Over.”

sploon comic page 2
“Another lost ball… not cool.” Pearl removes her VR headset.

“But it’s essential to the challenge! Game design friction!” Marina, Pearl’s friend, says while grasping her laptop. They are in a soundroom with computers everywhere.

“I know you’re a genius Marina, but would it kill ya to add guard rails?” says Pearl leaning in.

“The playtesters seemed to do OK…”
“Oh, Eight! Mind giving “8-ball” another try?” Marina turns to Eight, who just walked in with a tray of mandarins and energy drinks.

However, Eight has a flashback of their testing days...
“You let an 8-ball fall-”
“-Test Failed.” a voice on intercom says as Eight looks over the edge of a cliff.

Back in the soundroom, Eight appears to have fainted.
“See? Do it for Eight!” Pearl hugs Eight trying to wake them.

“Ahh sorry…” Marina says.

Here’s a sneak peek of my short story for @encorepwease.bsky.social! 🎱✨ Let's take a look into Pearl's POV... ICYMI preorders for the zine are open until Saturday, March 29th, so please consider checking out the different bundle options if you can! #splatoon #sideorder

Encore, Pwease! A Side Order Fanzine. The image shows a brown background and border of white coral surrounding a sticky note with an excited, tiny Smollusk adorning the left corner.

The story preview reads:
Pearl’s not usually one to worry about the outcome of a match. That’s all Marina, cautious and somewhat overprotective and again, too much of a perfectionist. Brash optimism is something that Pearl’s learned to exchange for patience and precision when needed.

She lets out a sigh of relief in the outer world once Eight fully inks the upper platform and rushes forward, trizooka in hand, knowing that she has nothing to fear.

Pearl may seem a bit distracted now but she’ll protect Eight with everything she has. If this wasn’t VR, Marina might never let her off the hook, that’s for sure. The two hear her now, concern ever apparent.

“Just checking in, you’re doing great! Don’t forget to claim the high ground when you can!” Marina pauses and adds, “But I’ll stay out of your tentacles for now.”

Pearl is also fairly sure she hears Acht laugh. “We know you can’t help it, Marina.”

At the bottom of the image is text that reads @yumeparadox sneak peek.
