If you stop the microwave before it hits zero, you need this BEAUTY. It has a mute setting. You can also press 3 and it starts at 3 minutes. It has no dial. It is everything I hoped it would be. Except it's only 12-hour clock. But hey, you can't have everything. Hisense H23MOBS5HUK. You're welcome.

Poor was the first book I'd properly read in about 5 years (I know, diabolical). Cover to cover in 2 days. Beautiful.

I'm butting in here, and others may disagree, but I feel like 4MA1 papers are fairly similar each year. If you've done enough past papers, I think it's easier to get a top grade than 1MA1 where the questions aren't as predictable.

A reminder that a grade 4 is a standard pass. That doesn't mean grades 1-3 are fails. A fail is less than grade 1. There are students who will be over the moon with a grade 1-3, so let's be mindful of that in the language we use on Thursday. If someone can get the media on board too, even better 😆

We made assumptions. The assumption was a Bala shark fish. I didn't ask why. I can ask tomorrow if it will keep you up at night though 😁

Room has very high ceiling. Fish were bala sharks, which we approximated to 35 x 10 x 4 cm.

Emmathe37th @emmathe37th.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
In #mathstoday we worked out how many fish we could fit in the room. 54000 if you're interested. Not sure how we'd get them, how we'd get them in, and what the smell would be like in 30 degree heat, but yeah, 54000.

I've seen a 7/1 split work well when the "1" has been lots of recall work. So the 7 teacher cracks on through the SoL and the 1 teacher goes over the essentials/past papers.

Anyone do NCFE Functional Skills Level ONE maths & have a copy of the new style sample paper? I have the practice paper. NCFE have said "yeah sorry you can't get it, maybe try googling?"🤦 How are my students meant to practice if they can't see the new style papers?! It's nowhere online. Reposts plz!

Thank you! I wish the specification was more clear when there are differences like this! I know they've changed it recently so they actually use the notation everyone else does, but I still have doubts about what is/isn't examined. I don't want any surprises!

Anyone experienced in current OCR GCSE maths? Iteration. Don't need to rearrange equations to make an iterative formula. Do have to use sign change/trial and error methods to find solutions. Do need to understand iterative notation. Don't need to solve using an iterative formula? Is that right?

I rarely teach it as I want students to learn how to do it without a calculator, and show their working. I also think there is major regulation needed in this area. But until that happens, it's getting to a point where it's silly not to use these features.

Does anyone know of a student friendly resource that goes through how to use a Casio calculator (83 or 85 or possibly 991?) Not just the basics - I mean the table and ratio tools, prime factor decomposition, using the hours/minutes/seconds button. Solving equations. You know, the sneakier stuff.
