Iran's president and foreign minister visited New York for the U.N. gathering of world leaders and proposed a deal with the Trump administration that would end the fighting and open the Strait of Hormuz in seven days. That's if the U.S. ends its military blockade of Iranian ports, releases frozen Iranian assets and waives sanctions on Iranian oil sales, among other conditions - none of them new.

What's different after past failed attempts is the speedier timeline. Iran's pitch to President Donald Trump said a quick deal might help him in the midterm elections in November.

Trump early Saturday appeared to share the first indication of his thinking, posting a map on social media of the crucial waterway calling it the "Trump Strait." Around the same time, Iran's state media said President Masoud Pezeshkian was going home.

Oregon doesn't have to hold trans women inmates in women's prisons, federal appeals court rules

Civil rights lawyers - and the state's attorneys - admonished the appellate court's language describing transgender people.
A federal appeals court Wednesday threw out a previous court order requiring that Oregon stop housing transgender women in men's prisons.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel said a lower court had incorrectly ruled regarding how Oregon housed its transgender women inmates. All three judges on the panel were appointed by President Donald Trump, and they voted unanimously to strike down the order.

Judge's language draws criticism
In his opinion, Tung repeatedly refers to transgender women inmates as "male inmates who claim to be female." He also said that broadly placing transgender women in women's prisons "compromises public safety."
Tara Herivel, a Portland-based attorney who represents transgender inmates, said she believed the ruling highlighted an anti-transgender bias among the panel.
"They don't even try to hide their animus for trans people at the most basic level," Herivel said. "That is bias with all the flags flying.
"It is only transgender women who are treated this way, as if they have an inherent dangerousness."

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a new program to screen troops 30 years and
older for testosterone deficiency.
The new screening will be conducted annually as part of service members' periodic health assessments, Hegseth said in a video posted on social media on Wednesday. Troops under 30 can voluntarily undergo the screening as well, he said.
The program is meant to ensure troops
"have the right testosterone levels to operate at your absolute best," Hegseth said in the video, adding that testosterone can drop with age.
