Just did a puzzle that asked for a "supergroup." Turns out the answer was The Beatles, and I'm miffed. According to Merriam-Webster, "supergroup" has a second definition: "extremely successful group." That just seems like codifying a misunderstanding, right? The Beatles were a super group, but... 😠

So, the "gray" deck stain was actually blue. Very, very blue. As one observer commented, "Looks like Veruca Salt exploded out there." (Don't worry. I dug the Roald Dahl flashcards out of storage for a quick review.)

To celebrate the release of How to Talk to Your Dog About Murder, Spotify's hooked me up with a few free copies of the audiobook so I can spread the love. Make me laugh with a story about a silly pet! I'll pick a couple entries randomly and send access codes.

Sometimes, when you get acronyms with multiple possible meanings, the options are related to each other and have a high degree of overlap, so you have to pay careful attention to the context to decide which is meant. "Tackles for loss" and "thermo-fused laminate" are not like that.

Whatever your opinion about the watering-down of the word "literally," I think we can all agree that, when used as an intensifier, it should be paired with something a little hyperbolic. Tony Romo just said of a call, "This is going to be literally really close."

Ah, college football season. When it's suddenly acceptable for an announcer in his sixties to get up on TV and describe a nineteen-year-old as "a really good-looking tight end." I'm surprised shipping isn't a thing in sports yet (as far as I know.)

Just found out that Ariadne Oliver, Agatha Christie's mystery novelist character, has a book called "The Affair of the Second Goldfish." German must have a word for when you want to read a book, but its existence is purely fictional. Unerreichbarwegenfictivsehnsuchtkeit? Probably not. ☹️

Is this weird? I just started a nonfiction popular history audiobook. When quoting people like Herodotus and Ovid, the narrator used the same (British) accent as for the rest of the text. But when quoting Ibrahim ibn Yaqub, suddenly he started putting on a foreign accent.

I was trying to look up which episode of "Landscape Artist of the Year" had a segment on Dylan Thomas. Google AI super helpfully bumped relevant results down the page to tell me this:
Google AI overview say "While Dylan Thomas a famous poet, there's no indication he participated in or was a winner of this specific show."

Everybody knows the OG pangram, but I much prefer: The lazy brown dog "jumped" over the quick fox. With a sketch to communicate my vision.

I was all grumpy about a mistake in a NYT crossword puzzle, but I did some googling, and whada ya know? In 2016, Elmo moved into 123 Sesame Street. What a world we live in.
