The bill doesn't address that kind of scenario, the mechanics of which are very different from hostilely revoking a permit that was already approved. I guess the courts will have to answer that one.

I could be wrong, but I think it would give wind companies extra ammo to end the current freeze on airspace permits. A court ordered DOD to start reviews again, but so far it hasn't. Though maybe it will by the time the bill would go into effect. heatmap.news/plus/the-fig...

the US is in the midst of a historic nat gas buildout — with much of it tied to data centers, many of the biggest projects going off-grid, and a meaningful chunk of it dirtier than the last big gas boom in the 2000s

I was surprised at the number of these projects stating plans to use combined cycle turbines in their permits. This Microsoft campus, however, will be entirely run on 2 GW of Caterpillar G3500 gas engines

Emily Pontecorvo @emilypont.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
Only a few of the projects have data offtaker partners at this point. There are a lot of plants in the 1 to 3 GW range that do have partners that didn't make the list, such as the 2.67 GW Chevron/Microsoft Kilby power plant in Texas

I'll note that Meta's Hyperion project did not make the list, despite its 5 GW of compute, because the gas plants supporting it are distributed across multiple sites in Louisiana.

It's clear not all of these projects will be built. Some of them are obviously speculative, or will be end up much smaller than their developers' have advertised.

We also need a radical rethink of how schools handle this issue. We have research coming out in the coming weeks that covers two years of indoor AQ at schools in CA impacted by smoke. The system we have doesn’t protect kids. And kids are extremely vulnerable, esp where baseline AQ is bad to start.
