It‘s #EuropeanArchaeologyDay 🏺, and at the Cluster exciting things are happening! The first fieldwork projects of HUMAN ORIGINS are underway, and one of it is Yerevan-1. Armenia is a place of stunning landscapes, and potentially of new insights into the time Neanderthals disappeared. #paleosky
A stunning landscape with a green river valley and a city on the left site of the river. A group of three people are walking away from the camera on the right side of the alley. They wear backpacks and robust clothes. In the background are high mountains with snowy tops visible under a wide blue sky with slight clouds.

The team of Andrew Kandel and @emilypigott.bsky.social is working in cooperation with the Armenian National Academy of Science at the Middle Palaeolithic cave site. It was discovered in the 1960’s and shows promise of new insights into climate, environment and human‘s life 50-30,000 years ago.
The photo is taken from insight a cave through its opening towards a slope into a forestall area. There are two archaeological dig sites visible, in the left one a white Woman with a brown ponytail and a khaki shirt is working. Behind her, an elder man stands inbetween backpacks at the wall of the cave. Another man is standing in the mound of the cave in front of measurement tech tools, a Tachymeter and a laptop atop of tripods.

Thesis done and printed 🎓 at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology - @univie.ac.at 🦴🧪 The past 2 years and 10 months has flown by. I can not believe how much I have done when looking back at the publications/other work. Where did time fly ? I have no idea. Still in bewilderment 🍃

Had the pleasure of presenting at two seminar series at the @ox.ac.uk this week, within the @unioxarchaeology.bsky.social and @oxford-anthro.bsky.social. The talks were centred on my PhD research, using methods such as radiocarbon dating, ZooMS and Stable Isotopes on late Neanderthal sites etc.

Something beautiful to start the week! A rare rock crystal tool made by Neanderthals between 200,000 - 40,000 years ago. From a Mousterian level at Merveilles rockshelter, Sergeac, Dordogne, France. 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. Musée d’Archéologie Nationale, Saint-Germain-en-Laye 📷 by me #Archaeology 🏺
My photo shows a slightly ovoid-shaped tool knapped from rock crystal which has a slighly yellow tinge, mounted for display against a grey background. The tool measures 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. It was recovered from a Mousterian (Neanderthal) level in the Merveilles rockshelter in France during excavations in the 1920s. Six further rock crystal tools were found at the same site.
