reported a minor nethack bug and they wanted a specific list hardware information, which all seemed irrelevant, but who am i to question forms waiting for the inevitable reveal that this actually only occurs on thinkpads somehow
hardware:
thinkpad P1 gen 6, i7-13700H, 96GB RAM, 57GB + 467GB free space
(I *think* this should be good enough to run nethack, at least until the upcoming Unreal Engine rewrite)

also the dryer does not use the circuit labeled "dryer", because of course it doesn't i think it's Mystery 240V 1 but there are also two other 240V circuits doing their own multi-kilowatt things in various patterns

emily, professional edge case @emily.fedi.uni.horse.ap.brid.gy · 18/10/2026
immediately after i posted on fedi about it, it dropped to ~60W (still more than a powered-off dryer should be pulling) so, uh, which one of you is it? i'm not even mad. i mostly just want to know how you pulled this off
a graph of various circuits' power usage, mostly steady, but the "dryer" suddenly drops from ~240W to ~60W at 20:11

anyway, what i've learned so far, having now grafana'd every circuit in my house and workshop: the single biggest consumer of electricity right now is a mystery ~240W load tapped into one leg of the clothes dryer circuit (i tried unplugging the dryer temporarily, it is definitely not the dryer […]

which means that, after following the logical implications from there and renaming some other circuits, we arrive at:
five circuits labeled "Mystery 240V 1" through "Mystery 240V 5", each currently drawing under one watt

i am actually misrepresenting how wtf my house's wiring is here the "4" labeled "garage" are actually 4 split-phase breakers controlling what i'm pretty sure is 8 separate 120V circuits

normal things to ask while doing home electrical work: "do you remember if your computer is on the breaker labeled 'furnace', the unlabeled one, or one of the four labeled 'garage' even though we do not have a garage?"

so hackerone now makes you go through an llm to send a report in. it's not good i'm still staring at the ip address thing. the template asked what ip addresses i was testing from, and i explained that i'm behind CGNAT and don't have a fixed public address […] [Original post on fedi.uni.horse]
LLM:

The pre-submission review found several issues. Here's what needs to be fixed:
Blocking issues (must fix before submission):

Title - Still shows the default placeholder "Report Intent #[redacted]"
Severity - Not set (review suggests CRITICAL with CVSS 3.0 score of 9.8)

Non-blocking issues (recommended to fix):

Asset - Review suggests [redacted].com instead of [redacted]
Weakness - Review recommends "ASI02: Tool Misuse and Exploitation" instead of CRLF Injection

Additional feedback:

Your IP address notation mentions 172.32.0.0/11 which is actually public IP space, not RFC1918 private addresses. You may want to clarify this.
Move your Business Impact Analysis content to the impact field (currently says "Describe impact here.")

Would you like me to fix all of these issues for you? I can update the title, set the severity, correct the weakness classification, update the asset, and fill in the impact field.

me:

title: fixed
severity: critical is overstating it imo, filled out the cvss thing and got medium. but also that's not a required field
asset: [redacted] is its own asset in the list, and that is the thing this directly affects
weakness + impact: it is set to those, think you're looking at a cached version
ip address: yes? why would they want my private ip address

scrolling through `strings elegoo_lcd.bin |less` while i wait for stuff, as one does, and found this neat bit
a bunch of strings, consisting mostly of capital E and right parenthesis, whose lengths make a cool wavy repeated sideways parabola pattern. i can only fit about two waves on my screen at the smallest font size, but it repeats several more times with various peak lengths. it's probably some sort of big lookup table?
