PARTICIPATION IS COMPULSORY. #makeaterriblecomicday #makeaterriblecomicday2026
Comic

panel 1: a dystopian city. Electronic billboards of Emma (@pseudonymjones) send a message - MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC. Cartoonist @emfields runs through the streets, scared for his life.

Panel 2: emfields is caught in front of a brick wall at the end of a blind alley. Pinned by a searchlight in front of a propaganda poster of Emma, he screams “No!”

Panel 3: EMMABOTS approach menacingly, intoning the rules - “PARTICIPATION IS COMPULSORY.”

Panel 4: EMMABOTS drag emfields to his art board, forcing him to make a terrible comic, the worst torture imaginable. He screams NOOOOOO

Illumination.
A shrew in a medieval monk’s habit, seated on a wine cork stool, slumped asleep over a scriptorium desk. His spider silk and dew drop glasses are askance on his sleepy head, and his hummingbird feather quill is slipping out of his grasp. His acorn ink pot is spilling at his feet.

I applied for a vector artist position at WotC; I didn't get it unfortunately, but I made this faux MtG card (entirely in Illustrator) as a portfolio cover page and I thought it turned out nice.
a vector illustration of a Magic: the Gathering card. "E. M. Fields, Vector God. Mana cost: 4 U/R U/R U/R. 6/4 Legendary Creature - Human Wizard. Haste. Activated ability: 4 U/R U/R U/R, tap: Create a copy of target permanent, except it isn't legendary and is a Treasure artifact in addition to its other types, with 'tap, sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color.' The artwork is an artist self portrait, wielding the pen tool from adobe illustrator, manipulating a bezier curve path in his hands, glowing with magic. Vector blend shapes and effects-laden closed paths form the blue and red background. The card looks like it's laying on a wooden table, and there's a red d20 (20 face up) on top of it.

A scene inside a large hangar space. There's a holographic projection of a beach at sunset taking over the industrial space. Real sand has been spread over the metal floor, appearing to have been placed through a static or magnetic process. On the sand sits a huge quadrupedal mech frame. It is white and blue and gold. It has huge sweeping shoulder pauldrons covered in delicate filigree. It's wielding a lance-like weapon in one hand that crawls with organic pipework. Standing proudly in front is the Baron, a rich man showing off a favored toy. He is stout and brown-skinned with long dark hair and beard. He has a halo-like crown and gold and teal armor, a long blue cape dragging in the sand, and a jeweled ceremonial curved dagger at his waist.A modified Tortuga-class Lancer frame, marching forward in desert camo wielding a long range sniper cannon.Illustration of a Lancer mech and a commando looking out of a dropship bay door, fleeing a battle that has destroyed a seaport.modified Tokugawa-class Lancer frame 'Beso Toxico', glowing with radioactive plasma energy. also pictured is the pilot, a Latina woman with a cyborg prosthesis arm, dressed in a long winter trenchcoat, wielding a heavy excavation laser tool.

Steam banner for the roguelike platformer game Angvik 2, available now! An assembled crew of fantasy hero characters posing on a mountaintop, with a sunset world behind them beckoning adventure.A hideous skeletal monstrosity lurches towards you. Roughly humanoid, but it has 3 arms, one wielding a spiked club, and a pig's skull. Guts and tendons hang gruesomely from its bones.Character sheet for a TTRPG style character: An orc named Walks-The-Red-Path. A wandering orc from the Black Cloud Steppe tribe, Walks-The-Red-Path was once a fierce warrior, but now poetry is his passion. Possessing a laconic demeanor (and his fabled great blade, Burden), he travels the land seeking... something unknown to even him. Is it a new philosophical truth? Redemption? Or simply oblivion for an ill-spent youth?

He is a tall orc warrior with bluish skin and long brown hair in braids. He has red war paint on his face. He wears a simple green furred cloak with a leather pauldron. On his shoulder is a curved greatsword almost 7' long. He is drawing orcish calligraphy in the sand at his feet with a long stick.Illustration of a Cleric of Deneir. He is a stout man with light skin and thinning hair. He is wearing green and earth-tone medieval garb. He has a leather breastplate over a green tunic, with a fringed green cowl over it all. The cowl has metal plates sewn in the fringe. He has a leather belt, from which hangs a dagger with an antler handle, a metal flanged mace, a leather purse, and a leather book holster containing a large bound book. Also hanging from the belt is a metal reliquary that looks a bit like a tall and thin bird cage. Within it is an eagle feather quill. On his back is strapped a rucksack, a wooden shield, and a crossbow. He has eagle eye googles pushed up on his forehead - they are styled after an eagle with a beak and feather designs. He is looking at his hand in bemusement - a small black-scaled wyvern is perched on it, looking back at him. Beside him is an array of all his inventory items. The shield can be seen to have a design on the front of the iconography of the god Deneir - an eye, the pupil an equilateral triangle, and a lit candle above, within some circular designs.

Lancer pilot commission, the Lioness Sedna. #lancer #ttrpg #ttrpgart #art
A Lancer pilot. She's a strong-looking woman with pale skin, orange eyes, and long white hair that goes to her knees. She's clad in medieval-inspired power armor, black and purple with gold details, including a lioness head on her left shoulder. In her right hand she wields a bardiche, and in her left is a red war banner, draped over her arm and showing heraldry of a purple lioness, rampant on a purple and yellow shield, over crossed bardiches.

SWALLOWTAIL.
Page 1 of the comic "Swallowtail" by E. M. Fields. The first panel shows a vista from atop a high tower overlooking the surface of the Omegadungeon - a vast labyrinth world cloaked in permanent eclipse. A Drakencult soldier in rad draconic armor rushes to the balcony and points and shouts - "It's Swallowtail!" The titular thief, dressed in dark blue leather and with their iconic swallowtail cape, leaps from the parapet. They glance back at the pursuing soldiers, showing the snarling bronze demon mask covering the lower half of their face. The next six panels show a montage of the drakencult soldiers readying crossbows and firing at the fleeing, free-falling Swallowtail! Swallowtail falls towards a long red banner hanging from a neighboring tower, grabbing it at the last moment and swinging away from the hail of crossbow bolts. In the final panel they are running away, clutching a skeletal urn with gold coins spilling out of it as they make their escape...The second, final page of the Swallowtail comic by E. M. Fields. Swallowtail runs down the spiral steps of the tower, drakencult hot on their heels. A hug, brutish drakencult soldier with a two-handed bardiche ambushes them from around the curve of the stairs, tackling them both off the edge as they land in a heap below. Struggling over the bardiche and Swallowtail's dagger, the soldier reaches towards them menacingly - "Now we'll see what's REALLY under that mask!" With his hand grasping the metal maw, Swallowtail barks back -

"IT'S

NOT

A MASK."

As the jaws of the 'mask' come to life and clamp down on the soldier's hand...

The final panel is Swallowtail running towards the reader, urn and gold in one hand and dagger in the other, swallowtail cape streaming behind them, and the soldier's bloody hand gripped in their metal teeth.

Really enjoyed Predator: Killer of Killers so I made a Yautja OC. They call her "the black widow"...
A Yautja alien from the Predator franchise. She has dark blue-gray skin and dull red markings that form a black widow style hourglass on her forehead. Her dreadlocks have teeth from various hunted species dangling from them. Her armor is a coppery color. Her main weapon is twin wristblades that can extend and rotate.

Cleric of Deneir Commission. I love doing characters like this! Thank you to all my commissioners!
Illustration of a Cleric of Deneir. He is a stout man with light skin and thinning hair. He is wearing green and earth-tone medieval garb. He has a leather breastplate over a green tunic, with a fringed green cowl over it all. The cowl has metal plates sewn in the fringe. Show me how you draw armour.🛡️
A woman in 15th century jousting full plate. Her armor is green metal. Her sallet helm looks like a snarling lioness. She is blonde, with a very long braid. She has cold blue eyes, and three jagged scars (from a lion attack perhaps?) running down her face. She has lost her nose, and replaced it with a gold prosthetic. A death knight standing before you. He has straight balck hair and corpsepaint makeup. His left hand is amputated and the metal of his armor is melted over it. He has a cinqueada style dagger at his belt and is wielding a simple but thick mace. In the chestplate of his iron armor there is a cage holding a red wax candle that's lit and melting.A death knight, kneeling, supported by the crossguard of her longsword, considering a black raven feather. Her face is little more than a skull, mummified skin stretched taut. She has long white hair and blue warpaint.Science-fantasy golden armor, very brutish and heavy looking. The massive helm has 3 vertical eyeslits, glowing red.

Duel
A scene from in the VIP pit of a Lancer mech duel in the Grand Arena of Throne Karrakis. Colorful pennants sway in the breeze high above the stadium. Huge shades that look like translucent petals shade the spectators, seated in the sandy white gallery stands. The architecture flows and curves rather than being rectilinear or purely circular. Pointed archways from the main arcade level. Ornate fluorescent light chandeliers light up the shaded stands. On the Field, a massive black Lancer frame lunges forward with a black broadsword, boosted forward with back-mounted rockets. A red ponytail flows from its helm. Parrying the blow in a shower of sparks is a sage green Lancer frame with a curved scimitar-like sword. It pirouettes on digitigrade legs, its blue cape tails swirling in the arena dust. It is adorned with golden filigree. In the pit, two factions face off, each representing their frame in demeanor and attire. On the left, matched with the black knight mecha, a cadre of nobles (perhaps from the House of Stone), all in black and red and metal and furs, stand haughtily. The main one raises her whiskey glass in smug superiority. She has dark skin and an undercut hairstyle of red hair. Next to her is an older man, bald and bearded, with dark skin and a grumpy expression. On the right, representing perhaps the House of Glass, a rakish young noble lifts his wine glass in mocking salute. He has twin swords on his belt and an orange cape. Next to him is a beautiful noblewoman in a dress covered in rose-like flowers. a chain veil covers her face. Behind them, vidscreens show alternate angles of the mech duel, including shots from the cockpits of each frame, showing the determination and effort of each Lancer that pilots them.

Hoefenwives, for #mermay. Troxy void-jacks beware of faerie-lights out in Iron Shoals...
Illustration of a pair of space mermaids, know as hoefenwives to starfarers. They are resting on a rusty meteoroid infested with some sort of green fungus. They have blue translucent skin that reveals internal organs. Blinking bioluminescence covers their fan-like tails. They have upper bodies that are shaped like beautiful women, but their eyes glow ominously like a predatory cat. They have "hair" that looks more like the mane of a jellyfish.

Panel 1: Enfield asks: "...anyone tried pulling it?" as she readies her axe.
Panel 2: the group looks chagrined. Vickers sighs dramatically.
Panel 3: Enfield's axe in her hand. It has a crowbar-like tip on the handle.
Panel 4: the crowbar end goes into the "lock", slotting downwards and gripping.
Panel 5 and 6: with a gentle heave Enfield pulls the door with her crowbar-axe. Slowly at first and then fairly easily it pivots down its center line, revolving open towards the group, revealing a dark passage beyond.Page 10
Panel 1: The squad gathers their gear up and gets ready to proceed. "Onward." says Enfield.

Panel 1: Enfield glances down with a pained but patronizing expression, her cheroot burned down to the nub. "Let's let Sten have a go, yea?"
Panel 2: Webley, with giant watery eyes tearing up - "Yib"
Panel 3: Enfield pats a quietly sobbing Webley. Sten marches towards the door confidently, with dwarven tools in hand. "Ya, me Stone-ken'll find just the right cleft."
Panel 4: Sten touches the stone of the door, sensing some aspect of the worked stone that only dwarves are sensitive to.
Panels 5-9: a montage sequence - Sten carefully measures along the door using his outstretched thumb and pinky as a measuring stick. He draws in chalk on the door, indicating some sort of ley line. He scrawls careful geometric diagrams, culminating in an X in a precise spot on the door. He raises his chisel, carefully aiming it. Sweat beads on his brow in concentration.Page 6
Panel 1: Sten applies a solid but not forceful hammer blow to the chisel. Nothing happens.
Panel 2: a beat - Sten looks with anticipation but nothing continues to happen.
Panel 3: Sten hammers away at the chisel wildly with loud reverberations - DNK DNK DNK DNK - the group looks on expectantly, Webley jumping in time with the hammer blows in excitement.
Panel 4: The chisel shatters in Sten's hand!
Panel 5: Sten looks down at the broken tool in his hand with a shocked expression - "Urk--!"
Panel 6: Bren looms behind Sten, shoving him aside gruffly with a huge furry paw. "Stand aside, dwarf." Her voice booms.Page 7
Panel 1: Close up of Bren's eyes, filled with determination. "See now how this door fares 'gainst the thews of Bren, the Giantess."
Panel 2: Bren approaches the door confidently, her giant bulk dwarfing it. Sten pouts to the side, quietly - "HALF-giantess." he corrects the record.
Panel 3: Bren's mighty arms come down in a double axe handle blow on the unyielding stone with a WHAM. GRAAAH she chuffs in exertion.Page 8
Panel 1: Deep within the halls of stone beneath the Omegadungeon, Bren pounds fruitlessly on the stone door. BAM BAM WHAM WHAM.|
Panel 2: Bren tries to grip the bottom of the door, to perhaps lift it like a portcullis. Nothing happens; she sweats and URFs with the strain.
Panel 3: Bren heaves and huffs, resting against the door, exhausted. The door remains resolute and unmoved. The dungeoneers are stymied.
Panel 4: The group sits in a circle around the lantern. Bren and Sten play cards. Vickers knits. Webley sleeps curled up like a dog. Enfield sits in thought...
Panel 5: Enfield perks up with a "Hey!"
Panel 6: Everyone turns and looks at Enfield, expectantly but mildly perturbed.

Panel 1: the stone door, in a dark and dank dungeon. Fungal roots surround it.
Panel 2: The Picker's Guild local no. 666 observes the door nervously - Sten, a dark-skinned masc dwarf with geometric hair and a metallic eye; Webley, a big-eyed kobold; Bren, a half-giantess with white fur and horns; Enfield, a femme half-elf with white hair and freckles; and Vickers, a dark-skinned androgynous figure in a cowl with makeup adorning the top half of their face. Sat atop Vickers head is Welrod, a grapefruit sized imp, frog like with bat wings.
Panel 3: Enfield lights her cheroot with a slow match. "Awright Vickers, whatchu see?"
Panel 4: Vickers raises a large glass marble to their eye and observes the door through it cautiously.Page 2
Panel 1: Vickers turns back to the group. "No Dweomer. No Glamer. Worked stone."
Panel 2: Enfield blows out a cloud of cheroot smoke. "Right."
Panel 3: The group cautiously approaches the door. Webley sniffs the ground, Enfield taps ahead with a 10 foot pole. TK TK TK.
Panel 4: The pole touches the door with a 'TAK'.
Panel 5: Enfield glances approvingly at Webley. No traps triggered!
Panel 6 and 7: Enfield blows a cloud of cheroot smoke carefully at the crack under the door. The smoke sucks beneath it with a 'fwssshh'!Page 3
Panel 1: "A passage!" exclaims Enfield triumphantly. "Check it, Webley."
Panel 2: Webley affirms with an excited "Yip!"
Panel 3 and 4: Webley sniffs around the door, inspecting it all over with his sensitive and wet kobold nose. He arrives at the conspicuous lock shaped hole in the door...
Panel 5: viewing out from within the lock, we see straight up Webley's snoot and his excited eyes.
Panel 6: Webley pulls aside his raggedy garments, revealing a neck adorned with DOZENS of keys of all descriptions. His pupils reflect the lock as he grins excitedly.Page 4
Panel 1: Some time later - a pile of used and discarded keys on the dungeon floor. Among them is an iron spoon. Another falls onto the pile with a 'tnk'...
Panel 2: Everyone has clearly been waiting for a bit and have grown bored. Vickers knits, Bren plays with some knotted rope. Enfield and Sten are smoking. Webley tries another key, unsuccessfully, and throws it over his shoulder frantically.
Panel 3 and 4: Sten looks at Enfield, shrugging silently, as if to say "how long do we entertain this?" Enfield shrugs back sheepishly in return.
Panel 5: Enfield reaches a gentle hand to Webley's shoulder. "Ay, Webs..." "Yeep?" Webley chirps in response.

Panels 9-12: The girl is running and not looking, not realizing she's about to collide with a scene - a gaggle of street urchins are distracting a large green frog or fish-like alien in red and gold finery. one of them approaches with a dagger, clearly intending to cut the alien's coinpurse from his belt and run. Picker’s Guild Local no. 666
A band of crusty dungeoneers in black and white. At the fore is Enfield, a pale freckled half-elf woman wielding an axe and dagger, wearing a tough leather coat and gambeson. She has a headband holding back a short crop of white hair. She has tired eyes and is smoking a cheroot. To her right in the front rank is Webley, a kobold. He is in a ragged cloak, with a cropped tail, wielding a hammer and spike. Many keys are visible under his rags. To Enfield’s left is Sten, a dwarf man. He has dark skin and a geometric hair style and long curly beard. His right eye is a metal prosthesis. He has ornate ring armor, and a short sword and hammer. In the back rank is Bren, a half-giantess. She is a hulking white-furred creature with horns. Her hair is in elaborate plaits wrapped around her whole body. A massive two handed mace is on her shoulder. Beside her is Vickers and Welrod. Vickers is a tall lanky person with dark skin. Their face has some form of solid makeup applied to the entire top half. Their gear is monk or nun-like, long robes and a sort of habit or cowl. In their hands is a magical device, though which runs a long thin scarf-like band of woven fabric and beads. Welrod, their familiar, squats atop their head. Welrod is a small melon-sized frog-like demonic being with bat wings, horns, and goat-like eyes.

He has a halo-like crown and gold and teal armor, a long blue cape dragging in the sand, and a jeweled ceremonial curved dagger at his waist.
