Mostly, they’re stopping early, at “Democrats: the party that doesn’t.”

I was. Probably an ill-timed bit. Sorry.

Okay, but how do you feel about Liechtenstein?

I have no trouble believing that, but I will give them credit: "fundamentally English in nature" is kind of genius.

That is weird, but I’m also willing to cut them a fair bit of slack here for publishing an incarcerated writer’s view of solitary.

Not professional, but I've taken a lot of pictures at museums. A polarizing filter helps some, but it's not perfect. Shooting at a slight angle also helps, but you may end up stuck trying to perspective correct with software later, depending on what you're trying to do.

That's how I knew Obama was a piece of shit. Opposing gay rights in 2008, he was either a liar or a villain. Nothing he's done since has disabused me of that. Better than everyone he ran against, but still, fuck that guy. If you'll throw anyone's rights out, you'll throw everyone's rights out.

I remember seeing something ages ago to the effect that if you want to make a dragon look threatening, model it after a cat, and if you want to make it look goofy, model it after a dog.

This might be a more immediate issue than use in prisons. I don't know that area as well, but I'm guessing there's less heavy-handed control over what gets inside refugee camps, as far as information or subject matter is concerned. I think that's one of the biggest obstacles for AI in prison tech.

EmergentWake @emergentwake.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
Oh, yeah. I meant specifically education in prisons. The obstacles there are a little different.

EmergentWake @emergentwake.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
This is definitely already being pitched, at least in the educational sphere. I don't think there's been much uptake yet, but it's absolutely coming.

I think most of us behave sometimes in ways that are contrary to our values. But I would not support as policy something that forces individuals into service to the state, military or otherwise. That is neither a means nor an end that I could get behind.
120
EmergentWake @emergentwake.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
With both, always, because means and ends are not separable.

I don’t think there is an anarchist way to do conscription, and I’m not sure that any context could create one.

Updated (and toned-down) version of Proudhon saying, "I dream of a society in which I should be guillotined as a conservative."

They were also told that marches are how change happens, so it's reasonable that a lot of them would think, "I want things to change. I guess I should march about it?" So getting people out at those events who want to organize and connect with the people who aren't yet on board can be important.

This guy gets asked, "How do you defend something like this?" His answer is, "We have a sniper post on top of this building." Absolutely astonishing. On the other hand, I guess I don't really have a huge problem with making something ridiculous and using it to bilk the rich?

I mean, I assume it's Schindler's List, but there is one other possibility.
Screenshot from the movie Grosse Pointe Blank, in which John Cusack plays Martin Blank, a professional killer who attends his 10 year high school reunion. He is wearing a black suit, standing in front of fa much smaller woman with short brown hair wearing a tweed jacket. His high school English teacher. He's asking her, "Are you still, you know, inflicting all that horrible Ethan Frome damage?"

The example that immediately came to mind was Bonnie Bartlett as Lynn Bernstein in V. Admittedly, in this case, the "going back to being a kind old lady" is partly just a disguise to not be noticed, but also she never really stopped being a kind old lady.
A woman with gray hair lighting a Molotov cocktail. The caption reads, "This one's for Abraham."It is dusk on a city street. An older woman with a little two-wheeled cart calmly walks away from a small alien shuttlecraft as an explosion bursts from the door. A cop an and an alien are shielding themselves from the blast.

Understandable given your line of work, but I’d also be pretty happy to see Magnum: Transvestigations, where a trans detective solves a mystery of the week.

Alt: Magnum P.I.: Tom Selleck & The Nun. Magnum realizes the nun on a ladder behind him is an assassin in costume just in time to dodge a bullet. As the realization hits him, the caption reads, “Nuns don’t work on Sunday.”

I mean, I think turning the power of the state against our enemies using legal procedures is very much guillotine logic, though I do still agree with your broader point.

I do kind of suspect that part of the problem is that the things it is sold for, the things it gets the most attention for doing, and the things it is actually good for are basically all entirely different things.

If you detonate a sufficiently large capitalism close to the existing capitalism, it uses up all the oxygen, and both capitalisms are extinguished.

Would you like her in a box? Would you like her with a fox? I would not like her in a box. I would not like her with a fox. I would not like her here or there. I would not like her anywhere. Perhaps if she were pecked by hawks, Or maybe we rethink that box.

And you genuinely see those two things (electing better people to office and nonviolently disincentivizing antisocial behavior) removing all republicans and some democrats from office? Because if not, your theory of change is at least as much a fantasy as vigilante violence.

EmergentWake @emergentwake.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Assuming you're right about the solution, the system currently in place makes that virtually impossible. If you see a scenario where every republican and some (probably most) democrats are "removed from office" without violence in, say, the next ten years, I'm curious as to what that scenario is.

Exactly! They’ve structured the movie to present two awful options so they can present moderately benevolent monarchy as a triumph.

EmergentWake @emergentwake.bsky.social · 02/08/2026
Yeah, but in the context of a pop cultural product, it mostly serves to discredit the entire concept by implying that the best we can do is a king who opens community centers.

Part of what’s so frustrating is that his basic criticism seems pretty sound. Killing monarchs is pretty unobjectionable. Distributing technology and arms to the oppressed, cool. Good idea. It’s mostly just that last phase when he’s like, “And then I’ll be in charge.”

I think there's plenty of blame to go around. The people who voted for him, the politicians who enabled him and minimized a coup attempt, the journalists and editors who treated all those politicians as credible and reasonable, the networks who invited them onto tv shows and gave them a platform.

Given how incredibly rare it is for any story, however damning, to have any meaningful consequences at all for the subject, it seems like it’s nearly all just chumminess.

I guess the one in the middle is the one who didn't quite come out right. They make him wear different clothes, and he's using some sort of miniature hammer on a generator. Probably a toy they give him so he feels useful.
