So now they've minimised Emma to counter the criticism that Josh was redundant in his assigned role. Emma can anchor this herself at the judges' table and reducing her contributions to accommodate him is not the answer. Nobody puts Emma in the corner! Johannes is great, no notes 💅

Tl;dr - a shed load of emailing. In summary, I contacted 59 cinemas, with 11 responses, and 2 programming my films. Not enough? Before my campaign I had no screenings scheduled for February, afterwards, all 3 shorts were programmed twice. Something Sisyphean in there, tho I get the rock will roll

Wrote something today that really made me well up... Imagining if someone said it to me how much it would mean, or if I saw it on stage or screen how much I'd appreciate it. While knowing the premise I didn't know what would come out the pen til it was on paper. It feels very meaningful to me.

I wonder how FB and Insta abandonment will fare... We need alternative platforms, perhaps a boost of formerly popular platforms, but also a shift in operational structures away from the autocratic. People can make things terrible, but people can also repair and rebuild and, sometimes, be spectacular

Gutted for Raducanu 💔 It's a wrench bc she is clearly so v talented. Feel like in recent losses, Sun, Badosa, now Kenin, it was strategy on the day that was the issue. It's deeply frustrating. I wonder if that could be floated by some media regulators eg if Disney+ wants to be able to stream in a country it has to make available in some form programmes which subscribers funded. We still need hard copy media because this is what happens. Sigh.

Had the sheer delight of watching lesbian classic Go Fish (dir. Rose Troche) in the cinema last night. It was like hanging out with lesbian pals. Just seen Alien Romulus and, thoughts 1) reanimating dead actors is ethically questionable 2) the dyke dying first and having the most phallic rape coded experience does not sit right. even if she's written straight she presents alternative, queer, not girly girly and she got punished

Autumn kicks in early here but even this is grim by our standards! It's a cliché, but...I'm a writer & when you spoke about indepth character backgrounds for actors when making Crimson Peak (my favourite) I was so intrigued. Some spells are trickier - recently 2 opportunities I applied for announced who else got selected and another sent the rejection email today. Film festival rejections weekly. Even actively working on self belief, to dig deep and carry on, the lack of endorsement from elsewhere is...a lot

Just finished the Decameron and for a while they had me worried but yayyy lesbians. Some classically tragic character journeys too. When backed into a corner not only true but new colours can show. Extremes can exist in one person, especially in a survival situ. Also a v horny show. Orgasm centric.

My current "donations" to film festivals so far (submission fees where we haven't been selected): £116.40. and that's not even a scratch on the surface. Whenever someone has much lower (sub £5) or even free entry I breathe a sigh of relief. Tho I can sympathise with fests needing running costs

That said, I thought the story was a clever idea, a bit like if you were to ask "how did Jo find that rag tag group to begin with". An origin story in a sequel, nice. And it had the hero journey, going ahead alone, being worthy of absolving her guilt. I liked lots in it. I'd love to have a go tho 🖊️

Of all the things they didn't carry over from the original - a woman screenwriter. 28 years on and progress is uneven and slow, and here went backwards. It's a disservice to character, story, audience. One day, I hope, it really won't matter the identity of the writer, but for now it does

2) Something missing in the characterisation and/or portrayal of the lead. Was glad the the section with her Mum appeared to have two women talking to each other, but, again, it didn't go deep. Approaching the end credits thought I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't written by a woman

Enjoyed Twisters overall, but 2 things 1) Kate's motivation to rejoin the storm chasers. She's supposed to be traumatised, carrying the guilt of people dying on her watch. But one article on tornado damage and she's off. Are her family there? The family of the people who died? Felt shallow & rushed
