I read the ring (exactly as I read AI) as being manipulative. It's addictive and makes false promises that are harder to resist the more you use it. They're _very_ good at convincing you that they serve you, when in reality they very much do not.

I literally was _just_ trying to get something to work using python, and the examples the library gave don't work XD hilarious. ( I kinda feel this way about shell scripts too, Makefiles & shell-heavy C builds very often are a complete pain in the ass to get working. Nowhere close to as bad as […]

gf was messing with newton fractals so i wanted to make some too :) the yellow and black pattern is because the pixels are colored based on angles, where 0 and 6.283 should be the same color, but I was lazy and just used the default colormap which does not know that.

I'm still at a slight impasse though, just because my browser needs forms and forms need some shell things (the rest of the browser does too, I just was more able to hard-code them to circumvent relying on the shell) herumph. I will continue to rotate

im gonna give up on shell things for now. But I learned much about what shells do exactly and why what's important or not. It's really fascinating the role that the shell takes, as a sort of half interpreted language, half user interface. I think I don't like the shell mostly just because it […]

My shell crashed after I used it for about an hour straight! I know where its memory leaks are, of course, but it's just kinda neat to see something like that actually happen in real instead of just thinking about it in theoretical :) oh yea and also today I got subshells and ~ substitution […]

Worked lots on my very tiny shell today! I'm up to implementing subshells and tilde substitution, and then I'll do redirection and a bunch of interface niceties and it'll pretty much be done i think :)

Linus Torvalds Working On A Hefty Linux Kernel Improvement With Claude Code
Linux creator Linus Torvalds has been known to use AI to help with kernel debugging and outside of the kernel tree has also done some vibe coding with Google's Antigravity. He has previously said he views AI as a useful tool. It turns out he's even now using Claude Code for working on new Linux kernel features...

Also the way that None of the shell features (such as variable/homedir substitution, shell-syntax-parsing, etc) are accessible as separate from the compiled shell program (which they Are Necessarily Implemented By!!) bothers me kind of a lot. As far as I know, there's no nice library packaging […]

I think I don't like the shell, in its typical implementation.... It's a user interface, but it also tries to be a programming language, and it kind of sucks a lot at the latter thing I think I may make & dogfood my own shell abt this

TIL that a phone number dialed with commas will delay 2 seconds at each comma. So to call an extension, you simply call AAA-AAAA,,,BBBB (where As are the base phone number and Bs are the extension)

Using 4G LTE wireless modems on a Raspberry Pi
For a recent project, I needed to add cellular connectivity to a Raspberry Pi (actually, an entire cluster... but that's a story for a future time!). I figured I'd document the process in this blog post so people who follow in my footsteps don't need to spend quite as much time researching. This post is the culmination of 40+ hours of reading, testing, and head-scratching.
