My back deck gazebo does this fun thing when the sun shines on the snow. Icicles form, and the snow melts and slides over the edge. When the balance is right, instead of breaking and falling off, the icicles curve inward. The changing angle changes where the […] [Original post on mstdn.ca]
The original post has a pretty detailed description, I thinkThe same thing, from a different angle. My gazebo wants to murder and eat you

Modern Organic Synthesis, Zweifel et al. Pg 29.
"Intramolecular hydrogen bonding between 1,3-diaxial OH groups in non-polar solvents confers appreciable stability to a confomer. In polar solvents, however, the solvent competes for intermolecular H-bond formation, resulting in normal steric effect dominating the equilibrium."

Picture shows 1,3-cyclohexanediol with the diaxial conformation in equilibrium with the di-equitorial conformation. In CCl4 solvent, the equilibrium favours di-axial, with an internal H-bond.

Let us all celebrate May the 4th in our hearts, every day.
Mature Princess Leah stands, looking off to the left. She is wearing a brownish-grey robe, and holds a blaster. The caption reads: "May we all be able to get up every day and, in spite of our pain and loss and fear, put on our boots and vest and plan to destroy the empire."

#SilentSunday
Frost covered trees at night. The one on the left is kind of yellowish because of the lighting. The one on the right is on the other side of a road and is near a street lamp and is lit up brilliant white. A pathway and a rustic wooden fence runs between them.

The fog the last two days has done some fun things to the greenery in my neighbourhood
A close-up on the right of some frost covered evergreens, with some frost covered choke-cherry trees empty of leaves in the distance on the left.

In the middle, amongst the decorative boulders are some red shrubs.

My house was visited by the neighbuorhood Velociraptor pack
A trail of footprints in the snow, that resemble dinosaur tracks.

In truth, it was 3-4 Grey Partridges.

Last night's pot pie dinner, and this morning's Aebleskiver breakfast.
A little pot pie. It isn't very dark, but there is a caramelized edge where some of the sauce leaked out. In the background there are out-of-focus Christmas lights.A rectangular glass dish filled with browned Aebleskivers, a kind of round Danish pancake. They look kind of like donut holes.

To the left is a kitschy candle holder with a snowman and a penguin wearing a scarf

It was the dog from the show Teacher's Pet!
A blue cartoon dog, wearing glasses, red shorts and a yellow shirt. He has a JugheadJones-style beanie that kind of looks like a crown.

And he kind of looks like my neighbour's house.

What cartoon dog does this house look like?
A house that has different colour of siding because it is part way through a reading job. It looks like a cartoon dog to me.

I expected more people to know about the benefits of wearing an inflatable frog costume to a protest against fascism. Because that's what we have in Alberta now. This is not a free country anymore. The government has explicitly suspended Democratic, Legal and […] [Original post on mstdn.ca]

We had a "solidarity rally" at work today for Alberta teachers, with lots of chanting and yelling about Human Rights, recall and The UCP has got to go. I got more puzzled than I expected when people asked about my suit and I said "Because I don't have an inflatable […] [Original post on mstdn.ca]

I love this, @eWalthert
A stylized stencil portrait of Obama in solid red, beige and (light and dark) blue, with the word "hope" below.
By Art Shepard Fairey, based on a photo taken by Mannie Garcia for Associated Press - Self-made, Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=32592376Parody of the Obama "Hope" poster, showing a Portland Frog in a dark blue cape, looking off to the left (presumably the Fascists are standing behind some line in that direction, after retreating from an inflatable frog.) The Frog is green, and the background is split into light blue and red, like the Obama Poster. Underneath the Frog is the word "Hop."

Can anyone explain to me why this is a 6-methyl-2-enone instead of a 2-methyl-5-enone? According to my understanding of the rules, the alkene shouldn't get preferential numbering to the methyl. So why is it numbered so that we don't have the lowest number at the […] [Original post on mstdn.ca]
