its funny that of all the games to basically just rip off hollow knight (hollow knight and silksong included) there is only one instance of one (ori 2) being made by a studio that doesnt completely suck ass at designing platformers and it's still by far the best one

the new castlevania really really wants you to know that the devs totally love castlevania from the bottom of their hearts which is of course why they made zero attempt to include any of castlevania's aesthetic or gameplay design

columbo was so ahead of its time
real frame from a 1975 episode of columbo where as a result of misspelling their own fake country name a student protestor is holding up a sign saying "freedom for saurians". alternatively, peter falk confirmed way ahead of his time on issues in the scalie community

i realize i've been tweeting a lot about AI lately but. this is absolutely it. the biggest giveaway someone was really kind of a shitty engineer was always if they viewed raw line output or their typing speed in the editor as their bottleneck. these people now really like AI and it doesn't mean much

this argument only works if you assume AI is the next industrial revolution and we aren't instead basically talking abt uber before they hiked the prices

this was one of the most upsetting things to hear visiting them in person, but it's not surprising. old-web libertarians like brewster loooooove crypto, and AI is something they can be just as annoying about while also being a little useful (you gotta realize they spend most of their time doing OCR)

kind of funny that of the five great lakes "lake america" is now supposedly the smallest and shittiest one. like damn ontario was doing us a favor taking one for the team

air pollution really must be the best example of the utter perversion of capitalism. industrialists are happy filling the air with tar and killing thousands every year in order to make more money. and this is still such a widespread belief that london was still in this state as recently as 2016!!

one of the most important lessons i learned in my last job is most software is easy, and you can just do stuff. but most engineers in industry have a low opinion of their own capabilities, so they never try in earnest. i think this is primarily what AI preys on

function calls, monomorphization, and return type inference. pretty close to being able to lower this to the mid-level IR :)

remembering when minecraft made the jump from intentionally silly "achievements" to progression-enumerating "advancements" and right then and there a huge chunk of the game's soul died

i wonder how close you could get to that leftist gamer memes account output by just piping disc horse bot into a random death generator

not enough people out there seem to remember that it doesn't matter whether or not AI is useful for X or Y. it's ontologically evil and you have a moral obligation to work towards destroying it

so convenient that whenever one of these studios gets called out for using AI it just so happens to be art that definitely totally didn't make it into the final game and you definitely totally will never see anyway

watched wwdc and my favorite moment was definitely the whiplash between some guy saying "we respect the art of photography" and like one minute later being "i can use AI to replace 50% of this photo of my kids' last day of school with generated filler, doesn't it look so much better"

boring but important PL work today: meticulously going through every type of definition and making it so definitions that are exactly the same don't trigger duplicate variable errors. makes it so diamond imports can work, like so:
a couple small programs in the Clover programming language. there is a file a.cl that defines a constant Foo, a file b.cl that imports a.cl and defines a constant Bar, and a file c.cl that imports both a.cl and b.cl and adds Foo and Bar. this used to throw an error, since on the path to c.cl, Foo is imported twice. but now the definition of Foo from a.cl safely overlaps itself

managed to come full circle enough that i fixed a longstanding troublesome generics bug (infinite instantiation depth with mutually-recursive generic functions). the typechecker is now smart enough to figure out arbitrary type parameters from the methods you use, without any typed initializer

a duckduckgo search for "overswing easing", like easing between two numbers with a bit of overshoot, but the top result is about getting better at golf
