There was the case of Joseph Samuel in Australia, who survived three hangings: 'the governor and the crowd agreed that it was a sign from God that Joseph Samuel had not committed any crime deserving of execution.' See also John 'Babbacombe' Lee. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_...

The Post Office and Royal Mail are separate entities. And the Post Office has not been privatised - it's a state-owned private company. The PO doesn't deliver the letters and parcels, just accepts them on behalf of RM, as well as (in some places) other companies like Evri.

Never done my DNA and can only get the paternal family tree back to about 1810 - all Anglo-Scots border surnames, probably sheep-stealing Reivers. Probably Norse too. All a bit fluid there. Probably some Welsh, definitely Cumbrian and Somerset on the maternal side, back into the 18th century.

The inquest into his death heard that he'd been diagnosed with heart disease aged about nine and was excused taking part in sport at school. So perhaps not entirely unexpected. The cinema, later renamed the Scala, is now the Oldfield Park branch of the Co-op.

I found it hard to understand why the bus I needed to get to one of its suburbs didn't leave from the almost empty and under-used bus station but from across the road outside. It was also pissing down with rain, which didn't improve my mood!

Like 'the pound in your pocket' it was a cliche even at the time (I was born in 1955) and I and some of my friends used to do Harold Wilson impressions featuring both phrases, especially when sucking on liquorice pipes (which were very much a thing then). Now, where did I put my Gannex mac?

Not 'busy', but it definitely has moustaches - Robert Coote's is quite pronounced, David Niven's less so! And the Royal Bathers' Club in 'Blimp' is surely there to emphasise consistency, even in time of war - be it the Boer War or the Second World War.

As for his war record, he was expelled from Sandhurst, joined the Lancers and then the RFC, where he injured himself stunting a plane while trying to impress his mother. Never rose above lieutenant, invalided out with only the usual 'Pip, Squeak and Wilfred' campaign medals. War hero my arse!

BUF members - including Mosley - were not generally imprisoned until after regulation 18B (1A) of the Defence of the Realm Act was brought into operation in May 1940. Mosley was detained on May 23rd, more than eight months into the war.

2/2 Theo is assessed as not dangerous and so allowed to continue his life as before. The fifth column stuff really started after Italy entered the war - large numbers of Italians, lots of whom had been here decades, were interned without trial, but many were released well before 1943.

This is a slight misrepresentation. 18B authorised the detention of UK citizens and was implemented after Dunkirk. 'Enemy aliens' had already been assessed and - if deemed necessary - mostly been interned by then. As seen in 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp', when Candy somes to Theo's aid. 1/2

I'm 71 and have a small pension from a previous employer - about £200 pcm - and a slightly enhanced New State Pension, having paid GNICs in the 1970s, so all that any increase in the State Pension does is increase the amount HMRC takes off me from my employer pension. Not exactly a win, is it?
