Wouldn't want too much time to go by without reminding the public at large that my book Contesting Earth's History in Transatlantic Literary Culture, 1860-1935 would probably look very nice in your local library, so you could ask them to buy it and test this hypothesis.

Another underrated ecosystem engineer: arborescent lycopods! Plants do a lot to shape their ecosystems, but these things in particular hoovered up so much water from the swamp - and then had it transpire out through the leaves AND the trunk - they sustained the high humidity of the peat swamps

Attended the opening of the Deep Time Trail yesterday. A guided walk (with audio narration by me!) leads you to Siccar Point, where James Hutton first gazed into the abyss of geological time. Just under an hour from Edinburgh, it's well worth a visit for the scenery and existential feels.
A quotation is carved into the stone of a wall overlooking cliffs and the sea.A rocky promontory sticks out into the sea. The rocks lie in angled layers. On the hilltop stands a crowd of people. An interpretation panel explains the rock layers at Siccar Point.

Just got back from an amazing week of #fieldwork on #Skye! Such a wonderful team 💚 We found fossils and saw dolphins, otters and eagles... What a week!

There are waves crashing on the pebble beach and mountains in the background under a cloudy sky.A big rock saw sits in the foreground on rocks beside the sea. There are mountains in the distance.A village sits on a steep grassy slope with the dark sea beyond. A rainbow sits above distant islands

Oh what fresh horror... Actually a very common fossil, but preserved in a way that looks like the mouth inside the mouth of an alien. It's actually a crinoid stem, an ancient sea lilly. I'd totally put this on my mantlepiece tho (or maybe make greetings cards...) www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We have some great rewards if you donate to help make the Deep Time Trail a reality! First up, we have reproductions of the “Lost Drawings”. These illustrations were prepared by John Clerk of Eldin and were supposed to illustrate the later volumes of Hutton’s Theory of Earth
Prints of the Lost Drawings scattered on a table and held down with beach pebbles. Most of the prints are black ink engraving prints on cream paper.
