Vindman is like @radiofreetom.bsky.social in that he's fighting the anti-Trump fight but can't see anything other than his own centrist Republican view being effective. Guys: "don't be super lefty" may be good advice; but also "no pot shots at Dems who are electorally successful" is even better

And Safeway has frozen (so it lasts) pre-made stuff that requires a pan and one spoon to make a family size thing with pasta and veggies and chicken (and yes, seasoning). It costs $10.

Anyone named after homotopy making a brownian motion joke in the style of Dave Barry gets an instant follow.

This is what I think. Ken Ono refers to "the AI-closure of existing mathematics" and a lot of that is (I think) doing not-super-innovative work that just connects more threads than a realistic human could be aware of.

We are rapidly approaching a world where a policy of "If you are getting your information from any source without a strict fact checking standard, you shouldn't vote on that issue" is a civic responsibility

Good point! But I think there are 2 answers: one is that in math anyway people do recognize Lean etc as a necessary and equal component. Second is that in most of these fields the "scruffy" stuff has always been seen as the more creative and "human" side of the work

That is, in fact, sufficient. It is the moral duty of american voters to practice good information hygiene and if everyone did, the world would not be perfect but we would not have The Current Problems

I do wonder if this is accounts for the over-representation of the "I'm super Christian but I don't go to church" demographic among Republicans. People who feel they have a religious take on life but tbh are not really "doing religious living", so it's really politics doing the lifting for them.

No kidding. It's a grim thing to say, but just based on my own acquaintances "senile people donating money to and voting for senile people so they will give more money to senile people" is a nontrivial chunk of our political dynamic.

Right, and with a human you can ask "where is the suffering happening" and in the absence of stress responses and boredom indicators you would have a similar problem. We rely on a common frame of reference. Do people who lack pain receptors suffer if they burn their hand off?

Yes the vast majority of these statistically obtuse analyses are basically just proxies for "everything sucks, and further I don't see them getting better any time soon." And I can't really argue with that Better for everyone not to cloak this in crappy analysis though

When people ask me what normal people should take in high school instead of precalculus, I say "statistics", but more precisely I mean they should understand whatever this is. Understanding the difference between comparing metrics and pulling numbers out of your ass is vital!

There are few graver moral offenses than "take some of the air out of the issue that I have made it my personal identity to be incredibly angry about" (cross-apply as needed)

elmobronowski.bsky.social @elmobronowski.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Yes, I get that (and part of my frustration is: people who make this arg seem unable to grasp that I do get it; & their inability to grasp it detracts from credibility of their other args) But "we can't anticipate what ASI will do, but we can clearly list the route to get there" doesn't seem right

Yes, and that's it. Every other argument is these 2 sentences in different clothing. Any demand that they fill in the blanks between "AIs are sufficiently capable in principle to self-improve" and "everybody dies" ends up in underpants gnome type arguments about how we wouldn't understand

Yeah, I'd be very much in favor of an assistant that followed the rule "get me to a human who can do something about the problem and then I'll step in." Even the arms race a bit....
