Pangram once again being weaponized to damage careers without checks or balances 🤦 This is a very harmful trend for writers. AI verifiers should *not* be allowed to decide questions of human authorship (especially when their errors and biases are so well documented!) shorturl.at/lLBiy

An anonymous account called Balance ton Claude – a reference to Anthropic’s AI agent – said it had fed the novel into the AI detection software Pangram and found it to be “almost entirely” written by artificial intelligence.

Questions have been raised over Pangram’s accuracy, and French media outlets have found other AI detection programmes that identified It Was That or Die as very probably written by a human.

Orélien, 38, has denied the allegation, saying it was racially motivated. “I’ve always loved creating and writing,” he said. “I don’t see why I would use a machine.”

He told the newspaper Libération that he used traditional language and rhythms that were Haitian and Caribbean. “The imagery, repetition and rhythm are a living language, they are mine.”

Who am I to point fingers simply because a wonky AI detector says some of my favorite reads were AI-generated? As you already know , curiosity killed the cat (me), so I ran my very own article through ZeroGPT, maybe to prove a point. A part of me already concluded that my results would be different because maybe these writers used AI to write; I could not be too sure. Guess what the results said? Drum roll please...68.3% human-written and 31.7 AI-written. I stared at those results, wondering where I had gone wrong in life.

Pangram can be easily fooled by “humanizer” tools that introduce grammatical and stylistic quirks to evade detection. (Yes, this is dizzying: AI that makes your AI writing seem less AI, to escape other AI.) A non-native English speaker who writes their own essay but then runs it through Grammarly, the writing software with AI-powered editing features, might be more likely to get in trouble than a student who let ChatGPT do all the work and then ran the essay through a humanizer.

With LLMs, we have invented a machine that uncovers the statistical regularities in our seemingly irregular world, and we have learned that the roughness is rarer than our intuition led us to believe. This machine will also produce statistically regular, smooth output that has the seeming of understanding and consciousness. But - by definition - it can't contain any of our future surprises, because it's just trained on the things we already know, and if we knew about something, it wouldn't be a surprise anymore.

Pangram’s interface resembles a chatbot. The website prompts users to insert a piece of text, and Pangram spits out a verdict — A.I., human or A.I.-assisted. Behind that simple interface is a powerful model. Pangram trained it by feeding its A.I. system millions of examples of text to analyze, and asking which were written by humans and which by A.I. Over time, the model honed its accuracy.

In our latest blog post, Jonah (aka 'Roughest Drafts' on Youtube) discusses poetry, drafting, and the regrettable surge of AI-verifiers onto the publishing scene—from Substack, to literary awards:

“While AI accusations are unfortunately impossible to avoid at this point, AI-verifiers are not the solution that tech companies would have you think they are. Even if AI-detectors were 100% accurate, they would still require feeding original work into AI, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid! When LLMs are trained on swaths of stolen content already, why would we willingly give up anything more to them? At the end of the day, Substack’s Pangram partnership is another step in the wrong direction.”

Reading through the comments of the Substack release post, it’s very clear: writers don’t want this. They see the ‘partnership’ for what it is: another attempt to shove AI down our throats.

Alex Garcia writes: "No no no! Please don't use this, folks! I hate that you're doing this, Substack. Pangram is AI. So you're basically telling us to use AI to make sure we're not reading AI. This is terrible.

The other thing is that you're not taking into account what authors want. Me, for instance, I do NOT consent to having my writing put through Pangram. With this new tool you're introducing, anyone can just dump my stuff in there with a click, without even realizing that I don't want that to be done. WTF?

Also worth noting that while Pangram's false-positive rates is indeed low (though I'd argue that even one mistake in ten thousand is one too many--what if you're that one?), its false-negative rate is much higher, as you can see in this article:

What that means is that you're much more likely to see AI generated text marked as human-written. Is that what you want?

But I guess this move makes sense considering how Substack seems to be embracing AI in general from the rest of the article. I'm very disappointed.

The Nazi crap was bad enough, but I'm sad to say that for me, this is the last straw. I'd rather pull out than have my writing put randomly through an AI detector."

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: judging style for “AI-tells” is not a reliable way of adducing human vs. AI-generated work, especially given the grave consequences of getting it wrong (e.g. loss of trust, deplatforming).

Amy Jo writes: 'I write all my stuff. And I've run some work through Pangram. It almost always flags something as AI. My "How I Work" statement will say "I wrote this with my own brainpower and if Pangram says otherwise it's full of s**t."'

Despite Pangram’s insistence to the contrary, there are dozens if not hundreds of studies that indicate AI verifiers turn out false positives and negatives all the time. (See: www.theguardian.com/books/2026/j...) Substackers are running their own work through Pangram to prove it.

Nikki Beem writes "I just tested two essays I wrote, one academic and one more personal, but both 100% me, and both were flagged as 100% AI. When I looked up typical “signs” of AI-generated writing, it listed some of the things I do, and looking deeper, it turns out I was trained to write for the same kind of publications and texts that train AI. So am I writing like AI or is AI writing like me? I now need to completely overhaul how I communicate so that my writing is not flagged as AI, and so I am not discredited as a writer with my own thoughts, opinions, and manner of storytelling? I do appreciate reading stories that feel genuinely human, and come from human minds, but I’m not sure this how we will guarantee that outcome."
