Trumpism is barbarism

The moral crisis dragging us into barbarism today is coming straight from our most vocal and influential Christian communities, which are so far from the teachings of Jesus they might as well be Satanists.

I haven't (yet) heard my MAGA relatives use the n-word or any of the uglier slanders of Latin Americans, but they have clearly absorbed the idea that's it's OK to say that America should be a white country, and the fact that it's less white is why we are having so many problems. That part landed.

The critique of populism was never popular on the left, it has now disappeared on the right, and the predictable casualty is constitutionalism, which exists to constrain the whim of democratic majorities. The Democratic message must be that Trump is illegitimate, no matter how many voted for him.

The only hope for the future of the United States is if the Republican Party finds it can never wipe the Trump stink off its brand and ceases to exist as a competitive force at the national level. Any other result and this nation will never be great again.

It's frightening to think that a generation of young Americans have grown up in a world where Trump's vile racism is normal. Younger Americans, we promise you: Even as recently as 2012, no one would have believed an American President would ever talk like this.

We accept that Lindsey Graham's quip is the gnomic prophecy of the age, that it is absolutely true, and it tells us how the story will end, but in true Greek tragic fashion, we don't know yet know what the prophecy actually means. Who is the "we" that will be destroyed?

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Instead of standing up to establishment Republicanism, MAGA has become a wholly owned subsidiary of traditional GOP politics, but without any filter on its racism, sexism, bigotry, imperialism, contempt for common people. "If we nominate Trump, we will be destroyed."

Hard to remember today, but back in 2015 Trump seemed like he really might run as a populist. Fast forward to today, Trump has become a caricature of Republicanism: * Loves wars in the Middle East * Supports big business in all things * Totally uninterested in the problems of ordinary people

This is the behavior of a man with advanced dementia who is losing contact with reality. The fact no one will take away the nuclear codes should scare the hell out of all of us.

What's funny about this post, if you live anywhere near San Francisco, is that literally every billboard on every highway says AI or Artificial Intelligence.

Today I heard someone refer to being "fooled" by an AI imitation of Joan Didion. It's important to note: AI is not fooling anyone, AI is stealing. It sounds like Joan Didion because it gorged all of her work without paying for it and can now spit Didion back out at you. This is theft.

The English Premier League season is fatally compromised, every match Man City plays is one that should not be happening, the sport has turned into a courtroom drama exhibition. Football as professional wrestling. This is the biggest league in the biggest sport in the world.

In the world of English football, this incredible situation has transpired in which Man City, the team in blue, have been declared fraudulent cheaters for over a decade, which means any trophy they win this year will be taken away, but they are top of the table, and the matches must go on...crazy.

I swear to God, every politician in America in 2003-2004, Democrat and Republican, strenuously denied that the war in Iraq was about oil. This was considered a matter of national honor and basic human decency. Trump today:

How many times does Confederate America get to try to destroy the Constitution and then move on under the protection of the Constitution we defended from their assault? Asking for the other 200 million Americans who like their rights and liberties.

The entire Republican Party tried to overthrow the Constitution and replace it with a one-party dictatorship under KING DON ILL. Don't forget this happened, and that the System tried to get you to accept it and continue to regard the Republicans as a legitimate American party.

It's a shame that we live in a time when so many professors are basically frauds, untalented and shallow topical shit-stirrers and provocateurs rather than real scholars.

There is a whole generation of academics today who seem to think their intellectual seriousness is measured in degrees of indignation. It's a problem for many reasons, among them that anger is one of the blindest and most blinding passions in the human soul.

The people who have been howling about FASCISM since 2015 will be 100% vindicated in the history books. Not just the MAGA die hards, but the bien pensant centrists in politics and media, are going to owe us a big apology. Save the apology. Throw these bastards in prison where they belong.

Donald Trump is every bit as nasty and evil a human being as Adolf Hitler. The times are very different, but Trump would absolutely strip millions of their citizenship, throw them in concentration camps, and start executing them. No question. Donald Trump is a very very sick man.

Every interaction I have with AI is like: - Hey, can you help me with this? - Sure, [yadda yadda yadda] - OK, that's lucid and stupid. - Yeah you're right, I'm lucid and stupid. Would you like to try again? - No, I'm OK - Sorry I wasn't able to help, next time maybe I'll be less lucid and stupid!

You really would have thought that a threat to start a nuclear war would bring American media to their senses. If that doesn't do it, nothing will.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Calling MAGA people Nazis will actually be an insult to Nazis if Trump starts a nuclear war in Iran. It will be 10x worse than the Holocaust. Yet as we stand on the precipice of this world historical crime, which Trump threatens every day, our media are debating gas prices and jobs numbers.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
If Trump decides that starting a nuclear war in Iran might help his midterm chances, he will do it. It's just a question of whether anyone can talk him out of it. This is a man who will absolutely murder 80 million people to give himself a little lift in an election.

I have all but given up on the Democratic Party after the Biden people let Fascism regroup and rearm, but...They can destroy the Trump regime, the entire Trump family, with corruption investigations. Jared Kushner especially. Do they have the courage to do this?

“Annihilating Iran”—which can only mean the widespread use of thermonuclear weapons against Iran’s nearly 100 million citizens—is, I’m afraid, the Chekov’s gun of Trump’s second term. He has spoken too often and too explicitly about unleashing such wanton destruction for it to be an idle threat.

We still have a few circles of Hell to descend. If Trump does start a nuclear war, Netanyahu will applaud, the usual suspects in American media will try to defend mass murder, the Republican Party will treat it like an election issue, and we will be subjected to a both-sides debate about Holocaust.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This formulation - take Trump seriously, but not literally - will be like the epitaph for the moral disorientation of American media, which has been so central to this crisis. He is threatening to start a nuclear war. Do we take that literally, or seriously?
031
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Donald Trump is threatening to start a nuclear war, but most of the networks have talking heads yammering about the price of diesel. Portrait of a country that has utterly, utterly lost its way.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Somewhere along the way, the United States collectively, in our people and in the power manifested in institutions, lost the ability to register the degree of moral shock that is required to understand what the hell is actually going on here.
0126
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
You can measure the degree of disorientation in American media today by noting the networks' reaction to Trump's repeated threat to start a nuclear war. Somehow, this "story" isn't taking priority over the daily firehose of quotidian nonsense. Are we that far gone? Yes, we are that far gone.

I hate social media, but I got a Twitter account back in 2015 and started shouting about Trump because I truly believed people misunderstood the nature of his evil. I had a PhD in politics, a whole family of Trump supporters, and a morbid certainty we were about to hit an iceberg.

At this point, if we as Americans end up not being responsible for a Holocaust, it's a matter of pure luck. We would deserve the eternal shame. We have earned it, richly, just as the "ordinary Germans" had in 1942. 75+ million voters made a decision to give that evil man the power to kill us all.
174
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Oh my fellow Americans. Here we are, at long last, the moment of crisis many of us have been shouting about since 2015. This man is about to commit a crime greater than the Holocaust, in our name, with our resources. He is evil, and he has dementia.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
There is a moment toward the end of Hannah Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism where she lets go of empirical moorings and starts speaking more poetically, almost mythically, about the condition of a people living under totalitarianism. America today feels like that. Like the Well of Lost Souls.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
America has become so hollow and numbed out by the daily chaos of Trumpism that we could end up responsible for the nuclear annihilation of 90 million people in Iran and the predominant response in America the day after would be something like numb confusion. Bewilderment, disorientation.
021
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The scariest thing Trump has said (recently) is that nuking Iran would bring peace to the world, because Iran is a source of war. That is how close we currently are to committing a Holocaust. Look around: does anyone seem to be registering the degree of alarm that this crisis requires?

If you've ever had a relative with dementia, you know the signs, especially if they were a narcissist. Trump's mind has lost contact with reality. The automatic mechanism that reconciles facts to desires in a narcissist's brain had already obscured the connection, and now it is simply gone.

So an evil madman has the power to kill us all. I would like to thank the Republican Party, and the cowards in the Democratic Party, for bringing us to the precipice of this crisis. You people are truly profiles in world historical cowardice.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
The question of whether Trump is America's Hitler was never about the scale of his crimes, but about the nature of his deepest desires and impulses. Trump would kill any of us, or all of us, to preserve what is left of his fragile ego. I don't know what else you call that. That is evil.

Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
"If the rule that you followed lead you to this, of what use was the rule?" A pretty good formulation of the crisis facing the US today.

We have given a fundamentally evil man the power to destroy all life on this planet. It is the most irresponsible thing any human society has ever done. That is the United States of America, our country - today, right now. I don't recommend any of us ever love or trust this country again.
030
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Trump is America's Hitler - no doubt about that. He is pure evil. Hitler was not a demon, he was a human being, with humanly comprehensible motives, and some real virtues that were turned into horrible vices by the circumstances of his time. People are capable of evil. Trump is evil.
020
Elliott Lusztig @elliottlusztig.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
There is absolutely no point to Trump talk anymore. He is mostly irrelevant. The only sensible conversation comes from shining the spotlight on all the powerful figures in this country who might be doing something to stop this, but they refuse to act.
