Interesting overlap with the discussion around Gregory Clark's latest manuscript at Econ Journal Watch (econjwatch.org/ancillary/bo...), which remains unpublished in part because of controversies over his claims about genetic inherintance.

Of all of the problems here this is perhaps the biggest one. The convergence of immigrant fertility to native-born fertility is documented over decades of research in demography. To assume no change over a century is something an undergrad would understand.

In case people are not fully across the Fairford story: What appears to have happened is that five men from London went to a small country village in the middle of the night to siphon fuel for resale. In small country villages, people notice things, especially at 1am. A farmer called the police.

In an ideal world Starmer would address the rise of the far right by declaring today as a national holiday in order to celebrate civic virtues, thereby drawing attention away from more divisive holidays like St. George's Day, but that might be too much to ask from this government.

Happy Magna Carta Day! An annual reminder that 1) the UK is one of the only countries in the world to not have national holiday, and 2) this day would be an ideal way to celebrate British values of democracy and justice that have had a positive influence across the world.

I assume much of this problem is related to how people perceive inflation: a decline in the _rate_ is not the same as a decline in the _level_ of prices/immigration. I.e., there are still more immigrants in the UK than there was the year before, even if it is a lower number year by year.

No one should get a free pass on antisemitism – so why does the right?
There is legitimate scrutiny of antisemitism on the left, but at the same time, rightwing media outlets offend with impunity. That makes no sense, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The paper thus adds to the literature on both African politics and PBCs more broadly, and suggests that future literature on the topic should both focus more on actual outcomes as well as investigate how democratization can alter the relationship between elections and goods provision. [5/5]

We use multiple data sources from Sub-Saharan Africa, including district-level night-time luminosity data as well as individual and firm-level data from the Afrobarometer, DHS and World Bank Enterprise Surveys, that provide evidence for our argument. [4/5]

Elliott Green @elliottdgreen.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
We suggest that the nature of PBCs should change with democratization, with PBCs in non-democracies characterized by more of a focus on private goods (e.g., vote-buying) and less on public goods due to incentives for both governments and voters, with this reversing as countries democratize. [3/5]
