ok so in summary it had no effect on you at all, so it's not actually about the quality of care they might have offered or your feelings of safety and dignity in the moment. You just don't like the idea of it. There's a word for that.

Powerful message from @jim.londoncentric.media here - investigative journalism costs £ and so do consider a subscription to @londoncentric.media if you can www.londoncentric.media/p/prince-cha...
London Centric hit its second birthday this month and I wanted to give you a quick peek behind the curtain on how things are going.
What you see: Award-winning investigations. Follow-ups in prestigious news outlets.
Mentions in parliament. The Instagram and YouTube accounts.
Readers' comments that are consistently some of the best discussions on the internet.
What you don't see: The tips we spend months investigating that don't result in stories we can publish. The dozens of emails and WhatsApps from sources that we receive every day but can't look into because there are only three of us and we can't afford more reporters. The legal threats that can bog us down in correspondence for weeks on end.How a story that lands in your inbox can take a year to publish.
The two months this summer during which London Centric was run from a laptop without a working backspace key. How, in an age of AI, this is very much a boots-on-the-ground operation that relies on a lot of hard human labour, late nights and standing in the rain knocking on people's doors.
Investigative journalism costs an awful lot more money to produce than spouting opinions on podcasts - which explains why there's an increasing number of media outlets that produce lengthy discussions and far fewer that find out fresh facts.
Everything on London Centric is funded by readers who have signed up as paying subscribers.

My wonderfully talented friend Patrick Hough has made a short film about Ireland, sexuality, the Brits and the wilderness. It's superb, and will certainly touch a nerve for those of you who are 1st or 2nd gen Irish. Watch it here as part of the BFI film festival player.bfi.org.uk/free/film/wa...

What with all the developments in world news I would hate for you to miss the fact that singer and chat show host Kelly Clarkson is currently engaged in vicious online beef with a Brooklyn boutique because it would not sell her a $15,000 animatronic bird called Molly.

I understand that it's politically challenging to give a grant to better off households, but you need people who can afford it to buy heat pumps when they're more expensive to stimulate the market so the cost will come down and they can be affordable for everyone.

The extent of our reliance on fossil fuels poses a national security risk that is simply unacceptable in the current geopolitical climate. Making that worse by defunding the only alternative is wrong. You can read the full report here: www.e3g.org/publications...

In the UK over a third of our gas (that goes into your boilers at home) comes from a single terminal in Great Yarmouth. Can you imagine the consequences if that was attacked? The country would be in grave crisis. In contrast, there are over 1 million generators of renewable energy in the UK.

During a time of energy insecurity and rising bills, we need a total rethink of what national security actually means. It doesn't just mean buying missiles. It means making sure the nation is resilient at a time of geopolitical instability. Increasing our reliance on petrostates does the opposite.

You don't have to believe me though; you can look at the Russian invasion of Ukraine, where the Russian military has deliberately targeted energy infrastructure during the dead of winter as a tactic of war. In response, Ukraine has invested in decentralised renewable energy.

Earlier this year, E3G released a big report with the Department of War Studies at Kings College which showed that our dependence on gas is a major national security risk. Cutting heat pumps to fund defence is like not paying for a flu jab so you can buy lemsip. It makes no sense.

just very high quality analysis as always. I've noticed Burnham has been rather demure in his comments on the Greens and I've assumed that's because he recognises he will need to win some of them back in order to retain a majority in 2029

Andrew Feinstein stood down for Polanksi, there is other psephological evidence that Green switchers are returning to Labour under Burnham. Whichever party you support, wish fulfilment doesn't help anyone

If I was a Green strategist right now I would be thinking "a chunk of the people who switched to us have returned to Labour under Burnham." If I was a Labour strategist I would be thinking "the Greens are still a problem for us, and this might become more of an issue as cost of living gets worse."

BTW I am not saying this in defence of any particular party. It's my dispassionate analysis of the result.

Ellie Mae O'Hagan @elliemaeohagan.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think it was a good result for the Greens. But running the leader upped the stakes and Hannah Spencer set a high bar. The Greens were facing an extremely popular Labour leader, not one leading a party that was on 17% in the polls. Thus, it was also a good result for Labour.

100% though I really think the key to HP mass market is dealing with upfront costs, which is the boiler upgrade scheme is so important

there are mixed views about this in the policy world. One of the risks is that the vast majority of households still have gas boilers and doing that would increase their bills during a cost of living crisis

Ellie Mae O'Hagan @elliemaeohagan.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
there is no single measure the government can take to reduce bills. It's a lot of different measures to reduce the components of a bill. Levies are the most consequential.
