Earlier this week, we revealed one example of a large childcare franchise overcharging parents - these crèches are only caught if and when parents notice and complain. Now, that's changing: first review of childcare fees to target creches overcharging parents www.irishtimes.com/ireland/soci...

They still provide it in Holles street which they are allowed to do because they're on the old contract. There are just fewer of them as those on new public only contracts replace their retired colleagues so there's less capacity to take private patients

Following our report on Saturday, Charlie's Childcare has now backed down and said it will not be pulling out of core funding - as it had threatened to multiple times when it was being probed for overcharging parents.

It's insane. Some smaller operators are genuinely struggling on state funding, others are clearly making a lot of money. BTW - the only time they're caught doing this is if/when parents notice. Nobody in govt is auditing how money is spent/prices are set. It's nuts

Charlie’s Childcare is one of 27 providers deemed to be overcharging parents after promising to freeze fees at 2021 levels. Another 30 providers are being investigated as part of fee reviews. Such reviews, in place since 2024, are only initiated if a parent notices they are being overcharged.

One major north Dublin creche franchise said it faced having to pay back more than €116,000, owed to 37 parents, after the department pointed out it had overcharged by €245 a month. After it was found overcharging, Charlie's Childcare blamed the mother of a family who had complained
