a sketchbook page filled with graphite circles, parabolas, straight lines, and curved linesa rough pencil sketch from a drawing figure of a figure lit from the back, with one hand on a curved wall nearby, listing toward the wall with their other hand on their upper abdomen as if injureda pencil sketch of an older person in profile with a vaguely sad expression

swearing, mostly
Excerpt from E.M. Anderson's MarthaWIP:
The hand retreated, but invisible fingers gripped her shoulder a moment later. Martha twisted toward them, trying to shake salt at them, but her shoulders were stiff these days and she couldn’t get the right angle. With an echoing cackle, the fingers dug into her. Ripped through her shirt, clawed down her back. Her skin split and bled.
“Mother,” Martha said emphatically, “fucker.”

a longish one, but. the first time someone learns Peter's name bc that shit is delicious hardcover / ebook / incredibly narrated audiobook / paperback to come (US *and* UK, huzzah!) bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
Excerpt from E.M. Anderson's The Keeper of Lonely Spirits:
"What was your name?”
The world ground to a halt. Everything stretched away until the cemetery felt empty except for them. The groundskeeper was so muddled from the two hours in which he’d forgotten the tragedy of his own life that his name escaped before he could keep it caged.
“Peter,” he said. “Peter Shaughnessy.”
A slow smile spread across David’s face.
“Peter. I’ll remember that.” He hitched his backpack higher. “It was nice meeting you, Peter. See you tomorrow.”
He walked off.
The groundskeeper didn’t say goodbye. He felt like static before a lightning storm, water falling down a mountainside. Like himself, three thousand miles away and two hundred years back, young and uncursed.
He swallowed, eyes prickling, chest heaving, unaware of the concern emanating from the nearest graves. His ears rang over and over with the sound of his name on someone’s tongue for the first time in almost one hundred years.

#FirstDraftFall accountability thread bc boy howdy I'm gonna need it* anyway MarthaWIP is a contemporary fantasy about a grumpy 60yo lesbian ghostspeaker with undx'd autism who gets even grumpier when her eldritch nonbinary ex turns up amidst a sudden spate of hauntings aesthetic / a line lmao
A pink slide with darker pink leaves etched into it, with an aesthetic for a work-in-progress called MarthaWip centered. The aeshetic is in muted greens, blues, and greys, and includes images of an older couple holding hands, a gemstone bracelet, an old stump, a forest, and a close-up of a woman crying, with a text box reading, "I wanted you to have a choice." Text around the aesthetic reads: 60-year-old grumpy lesbian, household god nonbinary love interest (they're exes); ghosts and other things; haunted small town; angry teen girl; migraines both magical and not; trapped spirit; caring for elderly parents; and binding spell that can only be undone if someone dies.A pink slide with darker pink leaves etched into it, with a recent line from MarthaWip centered, reading, "'Mother,' Martha said emphatically, 'fucker.'"

since I'm still obsessing over the "vegetarian" vampire novella, today I colored in my doodles of the bodyguard and the vampire (no new doodles on account of I'm sick)
An alcohol marker portrait of a brown-haired, bearded man with blue eyes in a pale pinstriped shirt with darker suspenders and a tie, seen vaguely from below, with an eyebrow raised and a look of disdain. An alcohol marker portrait of an overly excitable vampire with hazel eyes and black hair in a pigtail, wearing a green 18th century coat with gold trim, gold vest, and pale cravat, smiling broadly with one hand on his head as if in disbelief and the other holding an orangey-brown toadstool with a relatively flat cap

two snippets and an aesthetic lol #WeeknightWriters #FirstDraftFall
Excerpt from E.M. Anderson's MarthaWIP:
A disembodied voice rasped at her, crackling like a badly tuned radio. Get out.
Martha’s heart hammered, but she cleared her throat and said grumpily, “What d’you think I’m trying to do? It’s you what’s locked me in here.”
A long pause in which the only sound was her teeth chattering in the chill.
Then the voice rasped, with an air of annoyance, Never getting out.Excerpt from E.M. Anderson's MarthaWIP:

the best part of drawing weird Medieval people is that you really can't do it badly considering sometimes Medieval drawings look like this
a Medieval drawing of a horse from the front, but the horse basically looks like an egg with a face and legs. it's deeply terrible and I love it

and the "vegetarian" vampire story ("vegetarian" goes in quotes bc Archibald objects to that term on linguistic grounds lmao) came from a Tumblr post unsurprisingly lol it only ended up as a single line of dialogue, but it's where Archibald's whole character came from at first!
Tumblr post from frodo-of-the-nine-fingers: my actual vampire hot take is that if you're going to be a 'vegetarian' vampire (a vampire that only drinks the blood of animals) you MUST have hunter education. i'm so sick of people being like oh well predator animals are mean and scary because they kill cute 'harmless' animals like NO they're crucial for the environment and if you're going to hunt animals for blood you still need to stick to regular people hunting guidelines and only hunt things that are in season and abide by your areas bag limits

When residents of an Ohio town beset by a vengeful spirit adopt him as their own, he must decide: leave to protect his heart, or stay to save their lives?" Paperback and text are against a blurred image of a dandelion clock with seeds drifting away.E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood: "When lonely clockmaker Arthur Throckmorton loses his way in an enchanted forest, he meets the hero of his childhood bedtime stories: the Lord of the Wood. But instead of the mythical figure of his dreams, the Lord of the Wood is a grim man turning into a beast and losing power over a dying forest. If they can't save the forest before he becomes a beast completely, Arthur will lose the man he's falling for—and never see his family again." The Lord of the Wood's cover is blue, with a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze. The cover and text are against an image of a stag in silhouette in a misty golden meadow.

he still grumbles, but. practically cuddling
a small black cat and a larger orange cat both curled up on a bed, separated by a green blanket with a mushroom print. they're really not cuddling. they're too feet apart. however them being two feet apart without the orange cat getting mad about it is great, and them being two feet apart with the orange cat being fully cozified is astonishing

excerpt from E.M. Anderson's "vegetarian" vampire novella: “Let the poor thing alone. It did us no harm.”
Your mouth twists. The dog did you no harm largely because Archibald stood in its way. It could still bite someone—something—spread its infernal disease.

An aesthetic in muted tones. Images: a vampire, from the nose down, looking up with an open mouth, showing his fangs; he wears an 18th century coat and cravat. Close up of two men holding hands. An antique pistol and powder flask. Close up of three tan mushrooms growing from a mossy trunk. POV-view of an open hand balancing a knife on one finger against a blurred forest background, with typewriter-style text reading "I'm your bodyguard."

it me with the first line of your story, published/finished or not
excerpt from E.M. Anderson's vegetarian vampire novella: "The vampire’s name is Archibald Ramsay, you learn after a long and annoying interview that should’ve included no more words than his name, the job, and the pay. Unfortunately, Archibald Ramsay, Vampire (as his calling card says), is not a man of few words. You sit and listen and fail to get a word in edgewise as he rambles on about different mushroom genera, the glory of binomial nomenclature, and the lack of a comprehensive exsiccata of toadstools in the region, and only get his name when he stumbles into the realization that he hasn’t yet given it."
