The School of the Teacher Rafael Cordero (c.1890) by Puerto Rican Impressionist Francisco Oller depicting Rafael Cordero y Molina, the father of public education in Puerto Rico. As an important work in both the of art and popular culture of Puerto Rico, it is in the Puerto Rican Athenaeum.

Autumn Leaves (1855-56) by English painter John Everett Millais. Done in the garden where he and his family were living in Perth, Scotland, it shows four girls collecting and raking together fallen leaves in a garden. Only the smoke rising from the leaves shows that they are making a bonfire.

View of the Grand Canal: Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana from Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo (c. 1743) by Italian urban landscape painter Bernardo Bellotto. He was the student and nephew of the renowned Canaletto, a few of whose views of the Grand Canal in Venice I have shared previously.

Entrance to the Jardin Turc (1812) by French painter Louis-Léopold Boilly. This piece depicts the boulevard outside the Turkish Garden Café, which catered to the middle-class in Napoleonic era Paris. Keep an eye out for the artist who inserted himself on the right, in spectacles and a top hat.

The Wounded Foot (1909) by Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. While on the beach at Valencia, the artist rapidly painted a group of pictures including this piece. Sorolla worked outdoors to capture the momentary effects of light, water, and people in motion.

Feeding the Pigeons by Belgian artists Lievan Herremans. This piece depicts a mother and child feeding the pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, Venice. They’re probably tourists as I doubt the locals would want to encourage the pigeons.

Quiet Contemplation, Interior from Buderupholm (1907) by Danish painter Georg Achen. This piece depicts an interior from Buderupholm, an old manor from the Middle Ages. Achen was one of the more accomplished Naturalists of his generation and from the 1890s he specialized in portraits.

Angel (Angel Prelude) (1909) by Lithuanian painter Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. In addition to composing about 400 pieces of music as well as many literary works and poems, Čiurlionis has been considered one of the pioneers of abstract art in Europe.

Still Life: Flowers and Fruit (1855) by Prussian-born American painter Severin Roesen. There are over a dozen varieties of fresh flowers and fruit depicted in this piece. No wonder than Roesen had to make it 40”x 50.375” to properly show them all.

Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting (1855) by the German artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter. It depicts Empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo, and 8 of her ladies-in-waiting. The painting was displayed at the Palace of Fontainebleau during the regime of Eugénie's husband, Napoleon III.

Still Life with two lobsters, nautilus, and fruit (mid-1600s) by Dutch still-life painter Cornelius de Heem. Cornelius was a member of a large family of still-life specialists. I’m a bit impressed how he’s been able to keep the lobsters from sliding off the plate with it at an angle like that.

Donte and Beatrice (1883) by English painter Henry Holiday. This pievce depicts a scene from Dante’s La Vita Nuova where Beatrice, the woman Dante loved, refuses to speak as she passes him on a bridge in Florence. Holiday traveled to Florence to do historical research to be as accurate as possible.

The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis (1818) by French Neo-classical painter Jacques-Louis David. Begun during his exile to Brussels in 1816, this piece, inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, was David’s last to depict a couple from mythology. It now hangs in the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Sisyphus (1548-9) by Venetian master Titian. This piece was part of a commission from Queen Mary of Hungary, the sister of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. The commission also included a depiction of Tantalus and one of Tityus.

Banquet Still Life (1644) by Fleming Adriaen van Utrecht known in part for sumptuous banquet still lifes like this one. I wouldn’t consider this a banquet; it looks more like some table where they stashed ….whatever…during a banquet.

The Ironworkers’ Noontime (1880) by American painter Thomas Anshutz. Painted near Wheeling, WV, the piece depicts several workers on their break in the yard of a foundry. It is one of the most popular of Anshutz' paintings.

Tiger in a Tropical Storm (1891) by French artist Henri Rousseau. Also known as Suprise!, this piece was the first of the jungle paintings for which the artist is chiefly known. It shows a tiger, illuminated by a flash of lightning, preparing to strike its prey in the middle of a storm.

Girl in a Red Kimono (1893-5) by Dutch painter George Hendrik Brietner. Inspired by the rage of Japonism sweeping the western art world at the time and using working class sixteen year old girl called Geesje Kwak as the model, Breitner focused solely on the vibrancy and the pattern of the kimono.

Before the Race (1882-4) by French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas, who created over 300 pieces of art related to horses in his career. He was eager to know them in anatomical detail, so much so that, during the production of this piece, reportedly having a full sized stuffed horse in his studio.

At the Back of the North Wind (1919) by American illustrator Jessie Willcox Smith for an edition of George McDonald’s book of the same name. Considered one of the greatest pure illustrators, her works include those for many magazines, incl. all the Good Housekeeping covers from Dec 1917 -1933.
