"extensive research and feedback" I bet if they'd asked any customer in their focus groups, would you prefer to have your bag weighed at the gate or would you prefer for EVERYONE to just effectively pay an overweight baggage fee, they would not have voted for the latter

In 2032 the US will tell us they don't have any Virginias to spare and won't be giving us any, and then they'll generously offer to continue to base THEIR Virginias in Stirling and frame it as being for our protection 🙄 www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07...

Ah cool. So normally they just don't really know what their models are doing as a matter of general practice and it takes something unusual for them to actually read the logs. Seems fine.

I know we've all heard this before but I do actually feel like it's quite important to not normalise the President of the United States publicly announcing his intent to commit war crimes. This is not normal.

Australia should be thinking about this pretty hard. Easy to foresee that in any US-China war, the US would rapidly run down its stockpiles. We, if dependent on the same US manufacturers, would see our own orders kicked to the back of the queue at the exact moment we need them most. archive.is/BZj72

And if they can get their money into a few Sydney mansions before Tranche 2 FINALLY comes into effect July, which I'm sure they can, they're home and hosed because real estate agents here are currently not regulated under anti-money laundering laws www.theguardian.com/world/2026/a...

Timely. Are we talking about making sure our spending is effective and value for money? No, only about spending more to hit assorted arbitrary benchmarks. The metric has become the measure and it is fundamentally not a good way of measuring what we're (presumably) trying to achieve.

It gets better. We, the entire rest of the world which buys fuel shipped through the Strait, will get to pay money to the Iranian regime *in compensation* for the damage the US and Israel have done. Slow clap. 10/10 no notes. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/06/w...

Wait so the upshot of Trump's war is that Iran gets to continue running its toll-booth in the Strait (and now Oman does too)? And they get to go on selling their now-unsanctioned oil at wildly inflated prices? Dealmaker in Chief really knocked it out of the park on this one.

Similarly, we should think about the arm twisting which parts of the US administration are trying to do to the Gulf states to make them actively participate in a war which they didn’t start, don’t want and weren’t even warned about in advance.

Seems like the most air traffic over Oman/Saudi/little bit of the UAE since the start of the war. Everyone's decided this is their moment to get in and out, for some reason?

I guess you could cut through Saudi and Egypt like this maaaybe? You'd have to avoid Yemen and hope that flying over Oman and western Saudi would be safe

They take the same route over the Eurasian continent. Flying over Africa is also very complicated! No one should be flying over Sudan and Libya, so you'd need to swing out way west and come up via Nigeria/Niger/Algeria maybe? I have no idea how much fuel or how commercially viable that would be.

Elise Thomas @elisethomas.bsky.social · 01/03/2026
On a trivial and parochial note, this is all really going to mess with commercial air traffic between Australia and Europe. The only viable commercial route at this moment is over Afghanistan and Pakistan, which apparently are ALSO on the brink of all-out war www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/2/...

This whole op-ed hinges on the idea that Trump doesn't understand or publicly self-identify with the philosophical underpinnings of fascist theory and therefore can't possibly be a fascist. Phenomenal.
