Heavensward is still incredible. The Dragonsong quests are still incredible. I do lower my personal rating a little because of Ysayle's death, and how I despise how it was carried out and handled. But aside from that, it really is just... peak.

Unfair deaths are supposed to hurt, make you feel a loss that should have been preventable, but not make you feel cheapened. Ysayle's feels like it was a rug pull in the worst, especially with her absence in the latter half of the base expansion.

"An unfair death is SUPPOSED to leave you feel robbed." Yes, this is true, which is how Haurchefant's death makes me feel. We lost a dear friend in a situation that wasn't fair and the ache of his loss continues to throb. The story never lets your forget about him.

But it's so easy to cross the line in territory that makes a character feel done dirty. That's how Ysayle feels. They clearly INTENDED for her death to provide stakes, a sense of dread in which "anyone can die", and some thematic meaning in her demise.

There is a balance that must be maintained in storytelling. Death must exist, yes, and there must be stakes for areas of the narrative to carry impact. We felt that with Haurchefant, and I frankly think it was done well.

I'd also argue Ysayle was (and still is) one of the more interesting characters that exist in FFXIV, and it feels so enraging, and not a little maddening, that they robbed her of that potential and exploration in its infancy.

One could also argue we ALREADY got the "unfair death" trope with Haurchefant. For how much his death hurt, it felt earned in a way Ysayle's wasn't. He also had a narrative that did and continues to give him his flowers every chance it gets.

I think "death as atonement" themes can be done, and done well, but it can be easy for them to feel cheap too. I also understand that sometimes deaths happen abruptly and are SUPPOSED to feel unfair, but it felt like we were just scratching the surface with Ysayle.

Going through Ysayle's death again gives meeeeee a lot of thoughts. I think it's visually beautiful, but narratively? Still pisses me off so deeply. They yoink her from MSQ for the latter half (give or take) and then bring her back just to immediately kill her off as a means of atonement.
